FIFA World Cup 2006 - Re-writing Socceroos History - A walk through old FIFA Games

The Socceroos have qualified for the Round of 16 after a demolition job on USA on Matchday 2, with a 10-3 victory, which puts them on top of Group F heading into the final matchday of the group stage.

Aurelio Vidmar and Mark Viduka both bagged four goals each, as Paul Trimboli and Ned Zelic each netted once.

The Socceroos face Germany in Lens for their final group stage fixture, where a draw will be enough for Australia to top the group and face Belgium in the Round of 16. A loss, and Australia will advance as runners up, facing a strong Netherlands side in the next round.

Group F Fixtures:
14 June - Yugoslavia v Australia (3-4)
15 June - Germany v United States (2-1)
21 June - Germany v Yugoslavia (3-1)
21 June - United States v Australia (3-10)
25 June - Germany v Australia
25 June - United States v Yugoslavia

oh ffs it didn't save the game so have to replay the USA game

Lucky it was almost the same haha

The away draw against Iran in a hostile crowd with a team that doesn't have the regular football we have now, but brilliant on paper, was a really impressive game to watch

Impressive result in hindsight and big showing from Harry too

Australia have advanced to the Round of 16 in second place of Group F, where goals from Mark Viduka and Stan Lazaridis weren't enough to hold out a strong German side 5-2.

Terry Venables backed his decision to start key players on the bench in an experimental side with changes across the park.

"If you come in to a situation where you can rest these players to get more out of them at an integral time, then you do it."

As we head to Toulouse, Australia face Group E winners Netherlands in the Round of 16, with the winner to face either Argentina or Romania in the Quarter Finals in Marseille

Group F Fixtures:
14 June - Yugoslavia v Australia (3-4)
15 June - Germany v United States (2-1)
21 June - Germany v Yugoslavia (3-1)
21 June - United States v Australia (3-10)
25 June - Germany v Australia (5-2)
25 June - United States v Yugoslavia (0-1)

Harry was such a big game player in a short period of time

- away goal against iran
- home goal against iran
- golden goal against uruguay
- set up the home goal in 01 and 05 against uruguay

Australia have been left to rue a string of missed chances after falling to Netherlands 5-2 in their Round of 16 clash in Toulouse.

A Patrick Kluivert masterclass saw Netherlands head into the half time break with a 4-0 lead.

Goals from Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka sparked signs of a comeback for the Socceroos, but Clarence Seedorf was able to dampen the appetite with a final goal.

Australia managed to take 17 shots - 10 of them on target - whilst Netherlands were much more clinical, finding the net 5 times from 10 shots, with 8 attempts on target.

England have claimed their second FIFA World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Romania, as Norway see off Denmark 2-1 for third place.

Australia claim some awards at the end of the tournament, with the FIFA Fair Play Award after only being put in the book once, with Aurelio Vidmar seeing yellow whilst chasing the Round of 16 clash against the Netherlands.

Aurelio Vidmar and Mark Viduka both scored 6 goals, with Vidmar taking home the Golden Boot by virtue of less minutes, due to being rested in the final Group Stage loss to Germany.

Australia have a small break before the OFC Nations Cup, with the winner qualifying for the 1999 Confederations Cup to be held in Mexico.

5-2! What a crazy fake game haha

Oi, you're tampering with the time space continuum!

Crazy. Would've been a few days before my dad's 40th birthday and then Bergkamp goes on to score against Argentina. Why don't we get to play Argentina?

Maybe Ange has been moonlighting as Socceroos assistant? He’s just won the NSL with South Melbourne, he might be looking to spread his wings…? 🤔

Terry Venables’ contract is up - I wonder who Soccer Australia will go for…

But, for real, FIFA games with 10 minute halves and Professional difficulty, no matter the age of the game, kind of want to see how much the game difficulty fluctuates. FIFA 2000 is next (for Nations Cup final against New Zealand, a friendlies against Manchester United, FIFA All Stars, and Brazil, and 1999 Confederations Cup), but in my test runs, I’m consistently getting games ending like 10-7 and stuff like that. Might be tempted to halve the match time for FIFA 2000.

Oi, you're tampering with the time space continuum!
Will be doing a lot of that haha

Amazing how we can tie things like that - always good memories to have.

Kluivert demolished us in the first half so.. bit of a shame they also didn’t go much further in the tournament. Lots happened it seems - both Brazil and France failing to progress out of the group, and Argentina and Italy both failing at the Round of 16

A new look Socceroos look to bounce back into action, hosting New Zealand in the OFC Nations Cup, with the winner invited to take part in the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup in Mexico.

The OFC Nations Cup Winner has been drawn into a group with hosts and CONCACAF Gold Cup 1998 winners Mexico, UEFA Euro 1996 winners Germany, and AFC Asian Cup 1996 winners Saudi Arabia.

The other group will see 1998 FIFA World Cup winners England face off against CONMEBOL Copa America 1997 winners Brazil, CONCACAF Gold Cup 1998 Runners Up USA, and CAF African Cup of Nations 1998 winners Egypt.

Australia are once again the champions of Oceania, and are preparing for the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup in Mexico with a trio of home friendlies.

First up, to celebrate the opening of the new Olympic Stadium in Sydney for the upcoming Sydney Olympic Games, FIFA have curated a list of who's who of world Football - including a homecoming of sorts for Christian Vieri - to take on the Socceroos to christen Stadium Australia.

Australia will then host Mark Bosnich's Manchester United - fresh off an historic treble winning season - in two more friendly fixtures before travelling to Mexico.

The OFC Nations Cup Winner has been drawn into a group with hosts Mexico, UEFA Euro 1996 winners Germany, and AFC Asian Cup 1996 winners Saudi Arabia.

Australia's 1999 Confederations Cup campaign begins shortly - up against hosts Mexico in the opening match

Australia take on UEFA Euro 1996 Champions Germany on Matchday 2

Australia take on 1996 AFC Asian Cup Champions Saudi Arabia on Matchday 3

Australia's quest for the FIFA Confederations Cup trophy once again comes to an agonising end after a high scoring defeat to Brazil, in a repeat of the 1997 final.

Australia defeated World Champions England en route to the final, but a Ronaldo masterclass ensured that the Socceroos left the tournament with silver medals once again.

Australia will now focus on a range of friendlies before qualifiers begin for the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Australia v England Semi Final

Brazil v Australia Final

Be welcome to come back to the playlist - matches up to (and including the 2002 World Cup) have been played, and will be uploaded daily (at a time that matches the local time of the match it's simulating) on the 2002 Playlist below. When the time comes, I'll get to the mock articles and announcements and stuff like with 1998.

You sick bastard with those 98 WC match pics. My God what could've been. They look good.

Opening game against Yugoslavia would've had massive viewing.
I don't think they're the same quality as these 1998 ones, but just to show you I'm still a sick bastard @JS96

I know we would have worn a new uniform, but the game still has us in the 2001 kit, so have used that for thumbnails

Harry Kewell's 2 goals were enough for Australia to win the first leg in Wellington - will the Socceroos hold onto their lead after the second leg, and progress to the CONMEBOL-OFC final World Cup playoff?

2nd leg live on March 10th 3pm AEDT

with Harry Kewell rescuing a draw in the second leg against New Zealand, Australia have advanced to the Intercontinental playoffs, with a tie against the 5th placed CONMEBOL side awaiting.

To prepare, Soccer Australia have arranged friendlies with the reigning Asian champions Japan, and reigning European champions France
