Alot of global cusine's developed the way they did due to lack of meat, it was a luxury.

Makes you wonder what they ate prior to them travelling to the Americas and the East Indies. Hundreds of things they eat in Europe and base their whole national cuisine around never existed before then. Just for example tomatoes are the biggest staple in Italian cuisine and yet the tomato didn't find it's way to Europe until the 16th century.
 
yer nah mate - since nedievil times prok.pig was a huge stable diet for poor/farmers because pigs are easy to raise and effieciently turned waste into into food, also reproduce fast and convert feed to meat pronto. Near on every piece of a pig is "edible" compared to other livestock.

yes alot of movies always the Big occassion with a pig on a tray carried by the servants, pig/meat is not just for such occassions - it all depends how far back in time you go.

tbh meat wasn't anywhere at the high cost back in the 60/70/80's (can't say of early 1900's and prior) compared to these modern times being I agree damn expensive. By the way I still eat brain/kidneys/tripe tongue when prepared well :)

Mate you Northern Ities must have been pretty rich, my old man reckons they had lamb once a year at Easter and chicken maybe once a month if they where lucky... pig was a once a year treat during the church festival season... There is a reason why alot of southern wogs have high cholesterol and diabetes now... My father and law reckons when he came to Australia in 55 and got a job on a road gang, he had steak for something like 3 and half years EVERY night in a row... He couldnt beleive that with a workers wage you could eat met, pay rent, drink a beer and still have money left over to send back to the family... Australia was a paradise.

I've heard meat meals were reserved for Sundays and special occasions in the 60s and so on. Documentaries on life in Australia show the meat was plentiful and affordable. I wonder how buying power was however?

That aside they're saying a full third of the year (100 to 150 days) in medieval times were dedicated to fasts. That's amazing.

I also read that following the black death meat consumption increased because a full third of Europe perished and cattle became way easier to get.

Orthodoxy would be more similar to that to this day... 50 days Lent, 2 weeks dormition of Virgin Mary, 40 days Christmas not to mention Fridays.
