People that should be strung up from the nearest tree.

oh man, my relos would be livid, they luv eating them speciality dish.
For the record, NOT me.
On a side note, when your poor is poor and no dis respect might I add, wonder what vegans do when in that circumstance growing up.

Mate meat, for the longest time, thousands of years, has been a luxury. Your average peasant rarely ate meat and was, for all intents and purposes a vegetarian.

People would butcher an animal, generally, at special occasions like weddings, solstices, christmas, new years and that's about it.

It's why your mum and dad and my mum and dad ate heaps of offal like tripe, kidneys, heart, brain, lung, tail, tongue, and we don't. Because normal meat was so expensive and so bloody rare. (No pun intended.)

It's also why poaching was punishable by death, haggis is filled with offal and oatmeal and sausages and salamis were invented.

yer nah mate - since nedievil times prok.pig was a huge stable diet for poor/farmers because pigs are easy to raise and effieciently turned waste into into food, also reproduce fast and convert feed to meat pronto. Near on every piece of a pig is "edible" compared to other livestock.

yes alot of movies always the Big occassion with a pig on a tray carried by the servants, pig/meat is not just for such occassions - it all depends how far back in time you go.

tbh meat wasn't anywhere at the high cost back in the 60/70/80's (can't say of early 1900's and prior) compared to these modern times being I agree damn expensive. By the way I still eat brain/kidneys/tripe tongue when prepared well :)

ofcourse medievil times it was punishable because of the greedy rulers/Kings/monarchy you name it.
Naturally those not privilidged work on alternatives and good they did.

Hahaha yeah I had an uncle that loved that two.. I know what you eman about eating the whole animal, my favourite aprt of the pigglet is the cheek... mama mia Im drooling again.
there is virtually nothing left over amongst my inlaws/relos - yep the head/cheeks and even the eyes !
That is from their early childhoods even before their grandparents - living off the land.
Game meat.

Fascinating stuff here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medieval_cuisine

The Church

The Catholic and Orthodox Churches, and their calendars, had great influence on eating habits; consumption of meat was forbidden for a full third of the year for most Christians. All animal products, including eggs and dairy products (during the strictest fasting periods also fish), were generally prohibited during Lent and fast. Additionally, it was customary for all citizens to fast before taking the Eucharist. These fasts were occasionally for a full day and required total abstinence.

Calorie structure

The calorie content and structure of medieval diet varied over time, from region to region, and between classes. However, for most people, the diet tended to be high-carbohydrate, with most of the budget spent on, and the majority of calories provided by, cereals and alcohol (such as beer). Even though meat was highly valued by all, lower classes often could not afford it, nor were they allowed by the church to consume it every day. In England in the 13th century, meat contributed a negligible portion of calories to a typical harvest worker's diet; however, its share increased after the Black Death and, by the 15th century, it provided about 20% of the total.

And from our chatGPT friend.

How much meat compared to now did medieval people eat in Europe?

Short answer: most medieval Europeans ate much less meat than people in Europe do today, and for most people it was an occasional food rather than a daily one.

Here’s the clearer breakdown.

Average meat consumption: medieval vs today

Today (modern Europe)

  • Roughly 70–90 kg of meat per person per year
(varies by country, but that’s a good ballpark)

  • Meat is daily, often multiple times per day

  • Beef, pork, poultry are all common

Middle Ages (c. 1000–1500)

Peasants (≈80–90% of the population)

  • 10–20 kg per person per year on average

  • Meat eaten:
    • On feast days
    • After slaughtering an animal (rare)
    • Occasionally as bacon, lard, or scraps
  • Diet dominated by:
    • Bread, porridge, legumes
    • Cheese and milk (more common than meat)
  • Many weeks had no meat at all
➡️ Roughly ¼ or less of modern consumption

Townspeople / artisans

  • 20–30 kg per year

  • More access to:
    • Pork
    • Sausages
    • Salted or smoked meat
  • Still far below modern levels

Nobility & monasteries

  • High meat intake, sometimes daily

  • Beef, pork, venison, game birds

  • BUT:
    • This group was tiny
    • Their diets are over-represented in surviving records
  • Even monks followed strict meat-free fasting rules

A big factor: religious fasting 🕯️

Christian fasting rules dramatically reduced meat consumption:
  • No meat on:
    • Fridays
    • Lent (40 days)
    • Advent
    • Numerous saints’ days
  • Result: 100–150 meat-free days per year
  • Fish was allowed, so it often replaced meat
This alone cut annual meat intake by 30–40%.

What kinds of meat were eaten?

  • Pork – most common (easy to raise, preserves well)
  • Mutton – common in sheep regions
  • Beef – expensive, older animals
  • Game – illegal for peasants in many places
  • Chicken – eggs were more valuable than meat

Regional differences

  • England – slightly higher meat intake than southern Europe
  • France – strong grain-based peasant diet
  • Mediterranean regions relied more on olive oil, fish, legumes
But nowhere approached modern levels.

Big picture comparison

GroupMeat vs today
Peasant20–30% of modern intake
Townspeople30–40%
NobilitySimilar or higher
Population average~25–35%

One surprising twist

Although medieval people ate less meat, their meat was:
  • Free-range
  • Grass-fed
  • No antibiotics or industrial feed
So nutritionally, it wasn’t “worse”—just far rarer.

Hey we all can find sites with so many different stats and versions.
Pick one like you have I could spend time finding another but like I observe you go round and round in circles.
Not meaning you specifically I mean anything everything - no one ever goes yer that makes sense.
Interesting to read doesn’t mean it’s bang on and most Searchs you always find similarities.
I’m coming from family gens I know and their previous gens for eg though medieval poor did eat pig.
Anyway back on stringing one up we carry on I might just want to do that to you :)

I've heard meat meals were reserved for Sundays and special occasions in the 60s and so on. Documentaries on life in Australia show the meat was plentiful and affordable. I wonder how buying power was however?

Many people had a veggie patch too.

What a light change given the thread title.

I don't understand why they didn't let him go when they realised he was the wrong bloke.

Fuck these pigs. Straight on a boat if they weren't born here. 400 years in a jail if they were.

James*, 16, screams as a pack of black-clad teenagers drag him to the ground and stomp on his head while an attacker films on his phone in Sydney's Strathfield Park.

In another video, the gang forces a different 16-year-old into a toilet block and repeatedly punches him while calling him a "f***ot" and a "kaffir", or nonbeliever. Blood runs down his face as he begs, "I'll do anything."

A third clip shows a boy in a cropped top lying silent on the grass, his hands shielding his face as he is repeatedly stomped on and called a "gay dog", while one attacker shouts "Dawlatul Islam" — Arabic for Islamic State (IS).

probably wasn't holding his Queer for Palestine signs.

The judge that let this bloke off needs to be strung up from the nearest tree.

The violence did not stop with the arrests of the IS sympathisers.

One video leaked from an Australian chat group shows a bloodied victim held in a headlock as attackers yell "Islamic State lives", demand money and bay for his killing.

"You wanna be gay?" one attacker repeats, before stomping on his face.

Those same words are heard repeatedly in another clip, in which a 20-year-old university student is kicked unconscious.

While he lies motionless, his solo attacker stomps on his head repeatedly before leaving him for dead.

The victim told the ABC he suffered permanent facial injuries in the April 2025 attack.

A 17-year-old boy pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery over the bashing, but walked free on nine months' probation, with no conviction recorded.

And therein lies the problem. It's been mentioned here plenty of times but these idiots will sympathise with the same types that will bash them.

These same bashers probably attended a protest and stood beside queers for whatever groups and struggled to hide their disdain for them.

You blokes are unreal. Instead of sympathy you laugh it off, or dismiss it, because some misguided, blue-haired yahoo held up a sign at a protest.

Fucks sake.

What is it with judges being so damn lenient?

German murderer who hacked a body got 12 years and was released and threatened to cut off new partners finger to hack her phone.

Saw a UK show recently where some bloke had a series supermarket thefts of the less violent type but then slashed a security guards arm with a knife. Accumulated crime was adjudged for 22 years behind bars. The knife bit it terrible but he didn't kill the bloke while we've got others killing getting 12 and bashing with hate getting off completely.

I have absolute sympathy for those who aren't stupid enough to spur on those who loath them. It's all odd side picking and identity politics. Incredibly odd stuff.

Does the LGBT community really thing religious hardliners are on their side? I get the human rights side of the issues they support but they've got to realise there's an underlying group of religious hardliners amongst it who don't want their presence.
