Your unpopular football opinion?

Everyone (with a few exceptions) is in the World Cup - just not in the Finals
Yeah - I meant if they increase from the Round of 32 to the Round of 64 it really waters down 'making it'.

Almost like the weak feeling you would have getting automatic qualification from somewhere like, I don't know, Oceania. :devilish:

Part of the thrill of making the World Cup finals was always the fact that not all the best teams in the world made it. It was never meant to be the top 32 teams from the FIFA World Rankings or they would have simply made that the requirement.

The uncertainty of sport, the inexplicable success of the random underdog, the dominance of some, the stumble of other greats. The theatre and drama of qualifying is huge. For me it would be a shame if that gets diluted.

I'm not this old - and obviously social media wasn't around 30 years ago - but I wonder if there was the same discourse when the World cup went from 24 to 32 for 1998 (or even when it went from 16 to 24 earlier)

I know - just stirring the pot.

I know I felt it when they recently added more - even if we were to need it to qualify it felt wrong. But maybe so many great teams missed out at 16 it was considered fair.

We should ask someone as ancient as the game itself...Hey LFC....

Cheeky RIMB cheeky :)
Hey I’m not the only mature wise old fella here hehe
I get where you’re coming from re fifa openning up the WC more.
I don’t want to sound like the angry ol man screaming to the clouds but all here will as times pass and change eventuates.
When is too much too much ?!
I get things need to move on but how much does it change the landscape ? Do future gens care what it used to be ? Does it really matter ?
I recall when we made ‘74 - only 16 made it to the WC.
Just wow when think about it modern times being semi pros from down under.
I actually think now it was bigger than ‘06 ? As an achievement.
Did we care about the numbers ? Don’t think so - wouldn’t even been brought up for we had no intel like today.
I think that’s the joy we miss knowing less on a side.
I recall talk the change from 24 to 32 started hotting up but due to footballs growth you kind of understood the directive - it’s still too many imo but opening the gates is all about $$$$$ that’s all it’s about today.
Going more it sure is going to dilute it and drag on what was once such a brilliant tournament but am I screaming go to the clouds ? Will it matter to the following gens ? Doubt it I suppose.
Society is heading somewhere not for me tbh.
This will be the future tournaments a coming to you soon but with teams haha
Thanks FIFA thanks tech.
I’ll have to send my grandkids to Rambo and Arnie Training Camps haha

I wonder how many changes they can do to the world cup until people lost interest.

They want it to be 64 teams in Saudi arabia
Even though Saudi Arabia will have the 2034 World Cup they may not end up playing it until the start of 2035 as well because it will be a winter World Cup like Qatar 2022, and FIFA will no doubt move it to avoid clashing with Ramadan which falls during November and December 2034.

16 to 24 wasn't talked about much, as there was acknowledgement that there were more countries capable of playing in the WC. The timing of the switch to 32 was not liked, and some thought 24 was the ideal number.

If the cup goes to 64 teams, I think we'll see a few more empty stadiums. Teams will make records and it will be something that FIFA tries to boast about and push, but stories like El Salvador winning their first world cup game would be hollow because they'd have beaten Tonga.

I've found qualifying to be much more part of the world cup process the past cycles. It may not be for the biggest nations but I wish they'd stayed at 32 or maybe gone to 40 instead given there are 8 teams who cruely miss out.

Goalkeepers as captains has always irked me. Also, if the captain is technically the worst player out there, you could probably find a solution to it.

They do have qualities not everyone can appreciate but it's amazing how better off some teams out when the trodding loud mouth is taken off.

On current form, I’d take that..

Just catching up from 2 weeks in Japan. Isn't there a whole other section of the forum for this guff?
