Why is the world going to need fossil fuels for a very long time? Practically all energy consumption can be electrified at a cheaper cost than continued fossil fuel extraction, and there's a very obvious national security angle to electrification as well.

These petro states like Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Norway are gonna be fucked in a decade or so.

This is a question of political will and desire to go electric at this time. 86% of the world's energy comes from fossil fuels. Now that 14% or so is very impressive all things considered however we have to consider the following regions of the world.

* India & China still buy a shitload of Australian coal. India with a population of 2 billion or so also buys a hell of alot of Russian oil at this time. The political will at this time to go electric on a large scale just isn't there.
* China of course has a massive renewals program however it is underpinned by massive coal purchases and literally dozens of new coal fired power stations required to underpin their massive industrial base. China is on a geopolitcal journey of expanision and soft power projecton globally and nothing is going to stand in their way. As you say and as I said, for them, and others, it's a question of national security etc.
* Africa, going to tell the entire continent fuck you, your quality of life is going to go out the window because of Western obsession with climate change in all aspects of life? They don't have the will, the infrastructure, the desire, the money, the governments, the stability or anything remotely resembling the reality to get near any significant investment in renewables without literally hundreds of billions of dollars from the West. And then, as people bleat incessantly about colonisation, you'll be right back there with them owing their Western or Chinese patrons billions and billions of dollars and basically being vassal states. However, maybe that is what the desire to "help" Africa is all about. See how this works ? Empires come in many forms, usually from "help".

Saudi Arabia, UAE and Norway will not be fucked. They've been planning for the energy transition for a long time and have war chests of literally trillions of dollars which they can put in their own renewables, or lend money out to others for it, or as they've been doing diversifying their revenue streams.

For the moment however, Britain should start exploring the North West Shelf again.

Africa, going to tell the entire continent fuck you, your quality of life is going to go out the window because of Western obsession with climate change in all aspects of life?

Yep....There is a legitimate debate here. Africa has a huge energy-access problem, and affordable and reliable electricity is essential for manufacturing, healthcare, education, transport and jobs.....

If African countries want sustained economic growth, industrialisation and rising living standards, access to abundant, reliable and affordable electricity is fundamental.

Most African countries have contributed relatively little to historical greenhouse-gas emissions, yet they are being asked to adopt climate policies designed largely by wealthy Western countries that industrialised using fossil fuels.

It feels somewhat hypocritical.....
