World Cup 2026 Australia thread

I remember seeing this on Insta when it was first posted and the comments were flooded with people calling us shit and waffling on about how bad the A-League/Aussie soccer is.

Inspiring video though, with a great song in the background too. And he has a point: sure, we obviously won't win the World Cup but we can absolutely make an underdog story and aim for at least the quarters. Look at what the Matildas did at the 2021 Olympics and 2023 World Cup for example.
This is why the Garb and Paartalu (happy with 3 draws) picks are so stupid. We aren't going further than before or something truly special with their picks for the 26.

Probably the best thread to get the feelers out there as I care for the forum aesthetics (despite dead threads eventually being bumped down) and easy to locate and clear places of conversation on a certain topic.

Should this thread be the Australian match thread too or should each match have its own thread in order to locate it more easily during and after the tournament? Perhaps just an Australian match thread encompassing all games we play?

We have the general WC thread which may suffice for all the other matches but in the past we have threads for each group with analysis but invariably we ended up chatting in the general thread. I like the idea of specific group threads provided uses make the effort to go to them specifically.

What do people think? Feel free to respond with who cares if you're that indifferent. I've just found previous tournaments have seen chats ending up in uncommon places and some users have also found it tricky to locate where everyone is during a match. We don't have the thread viewing info like on 442.

Nah make a match thread I reckon like we have for the Asian Cup.

Separate thread for each match

Seeing all these Kosovo players doing well in big European leave is makes me think they have a very good shout.

Slovakia are steady with some good players too. Romania remind me of Australia just plotting their playoff strategy under the radar.

Turkey will be feeling the pressure I think and I don't think they do too well under it if things start to go wrong.

In case it is volpato it looks like there are hints of attitude problems (from Fabio Grosso)

Volpato come sta?

How's Volpato?

"He's alive (laughs, ed.). I talk to him often, I have a great relationship, I tell him what so many have told him. You have to make choices and try to make them right. He has tremendous potential, and that potential needs to be nurtured, and he can make progress. He's had opportunities, then he's been sidelined. Every now and then, a few annoyances bother him and keep him from being consistent, but I believe in him so much. I can't always prove it, but he's a strong guy, we're keeping him, and I'm convinced he'll continue because he's got impressive numbers. The thing he needs to recognize is that it's important to strive for daily numbers and not settle."

I've always been ambivalent about this 48 team cash-grabbing (ticket prices!) Gianni Sycophanto Infantino World Cup with its FIFA Peace prize award to someone who's just killed 160 primary school girls in Iran. . US Homeland Security has already said a WC ticket is no protection against being denied entry if you have an anti-Trump retweet on your phone. ICE agents outside stadiums? No Iranian fans, or fans from Senegal or Ivory Coast permitted entry by Trump decree. Games in Mexico threatened by drug cartel violence. Graeme Arnold is stuck in Doha or Dubai pleading with FIFA to postpone Iraq's inter-continental play-off match because Iraqi airspace is closed and the team is facing a 50 hour overland journey fron Baghdad to Istanbul so as to fly to US for the play-off game, likely against Bolivia. I live for the 4 year cycles of World Cups especially since the amazing consecutive run of Socceroos qualifications since 2006 (I was there:) but I fear world events may overtake the 2026 tournament. Not to mention the fate of the brave Iranian women who refused to sing the national anthem in their first game and are now being branded as traitors by the mullahs. We're practically back to the 1938 WC in France, won by Italy whose team gave the raised straight arm Fascist salute during the ntional anthem. The world is a sick fucking place at the moment and the World Game has a big role to play in healing the rifts but maybe Vini Jr would disagree.
