World Cup 2026 Australia thread

We're obviously going to hold back as long as possible but I think we'll see the instructions like against the USA where an early forward venture chance should be taken.

It's annoying that if we take the lead we tend to lose concentration. If we score first and early then the game usually opens up a lot more. Ideally we do score regardless in order to force the opponent's hand and take it from there.

Our front 3 at the last World Cup was Goodwin, Duke, Leckie.

Our front 3 this World Cup is likely to be some combo of McGree, Toure, Irankunda. I'm hoping Segecic.

I feel like it's a small but important shift from AL level to a Championship quality frontline.

Can't stand hearing some podcasters suggest Leckie has a shout due to his position change. For the love of god his experience isn't all that valuable compared to the skill of the next generation.

I very much think Duke will be on the plane. He is the perfect guy to come on with 20-30 mins to go to defend form the front when protecting a lead when someone up front tires. He still has a role.

Last World Cup he was the only person who could do a good job as a lone central striker and he filled that role well (or better than anyone else we had). I think you have identified the role he could fill this world cup and like you I think he will be part of the 26 for this reason.

Our 3 "A League level" forwards each scored at the last WC against France, Tunisia and Denmark, and forced an own goal from Argentina off a Goodwin strike in the round of 16. In fact, this 2022 forward line is the 2nd most potent of all our WC campaigns, scoring only 1 goal fewer than the GG in Germany in 2006. And 2 of the 4 matches we played in Qatar were against the eventual finalists. Credit where credit is due.

Take my post as bullish of the new guys rather than critical of the last mob.

Alright everyone, I’ve finished my simulations of the playoffs and the following nations have qualified for my simulated run through of the World Cup

UEFA A - Italy
UEFA B - Sweden
UEFA C - Kosovo
UEFA D - Denmark
Intercontinental A - DR Congo
Intercontinental B - Bolivia

I’ll be doing a sim through of the groups using these as the extra qualifiers this week, with screen recordings of the sims for Australia’s games (and might do All Whites as well) and see how the tournament progresses.

I’ll probably do another one after the actual playoffs are complete (with the actual qualifiers, and using the March squads for all teams as close as possible), and then a third as the final World Cup squads are announced.

Actually.. I might start a new thread to cover these sims, rather than clog up the actual thread. But, at least we all know now

I was thinking more that this is good preparation for Paraguay, but maybe US too.
Didn't even think of that - 2 birds one stone as they say. Perhaps we can get a UEFA nation for a second friendly over there? I'm just trying to think who is most like Turkey that has already qualified (assuming of course they win the playoff).

Being based in Oakland/Bay area means travelling relatively small distances by plane for the opening 2 games in Vancouver and Seattle and depending on team hotel location being a 50km travel distance from Levi Stadium for game 3.
