Of players? And by next gen do you mean already called up or not called up? Now or the future?
In our current squad I think it’s pretty clear but as for who we should pick next time, I’ve been very vocal about capping Daniela Galić (an attacking midfielder who scores a lot for Vittsjö GIK in Sweden’s Damallsvenskan, one of Europe’s Big Six leagues) and Annalise Rasmussen (a striker who just signed for Juventus from Central Coast Mariners for a club record fee for the Mariners). Both dual internationals who could go and play for other national teams (Croatia for Dani and the Cook Islands or South Africa for Razz). They’d both have a serious chance of playing for those teams too (Croatia is way behind in women’s football especially looking at their men’s team and the rise of Slovenia in women’s football). Crazily Razz has never been capped for the Matildas’ senior team before (Dani has five friendly caps). A couple other ALW players who have been capped, players like Sharn Freier, Izzy Gómez, Grace Kuilamu, Teresa Morrissey, Courtney Newbon, Rhianna Pollicina, Natasha Prior, Adriana Taranto, etc should be picked again for friendlies just to test the waters. We should bring back Jacynta Gala (who can still represent Argentina, Italy or Sri Lanka) and Jess Nash for friendlies. Jess was starting for Sassuolo for a while then they got a new coach and then got benched. She signed from Mariners this season after they won a miracle grand final last season.
On the topic of dual internationals, we lost Vesna Milivojević (an attacking midfielder who just signed for Malmö which is Courtney Nevin and Amy Sayer’s team in the Damallsvenskan) a few years ago to Serbia (who also lag behind though not to the extent of Croatia given Croatia’s men’s team is far better than Serbia’s whereas in the women’s they’re about the same). We’ve lost a few others too but they aren’t huge losses. Vesna was a bad loss though.
In the near future I’d like to see more ALW players like Indi dos Santos, Alana Jančevski, Aideen Keane, Leticia McKenna, Shelby McMahon, Willa Pearson, Taylor Ray, Sienna Saveska and Peta Trimis, get picked for friendlies. When she gets more minutes Danella Butrus would be good too. She could theoretically play for Iraq as she was born there and moved here when she was seven but given she’s an Assyrian Christian (a persecuted minority group in the Arab Muslim-majority country of Iraq) and fled the country due to war I don’t think she would get picked for Iraq. Another player I wanna see is Leia Varley, who was solid at Brisbane Roar before moving to Nuremberg in Germany, though we’ve got a lot of depth at CB so she’s got a lot of competition if she wants to play at the World Cup.
Further to my point above, we sent an all-ALW U23 Matildas side to the ASEAN Championships against senior national teams (not very good ones as they’re Southeast Asian teams but still) and ended up winning the whole tournament. We got some close games as well as some massive wins (we smashed East Timor 9–0, though Alana Jančevski was still kind enough to do a jersey swap with a Timorese player). If you go through the squad lists of previous tournaments you’ll see a couple Matildas in there, some who ended up being regulars (e.g. Wini Heatley and Amy Sayer) while others ended up being capped only a few times (e.g. Sarah Hunter and Mackenzie Hawkesby).
