Women's Asian Cup match discussion thread

For a period of time a few years ago, I thought Gorry was our best player.

I have thought her off the ball movement to support the ball carrier and open passing lanes has been pretty decent.

She is also a proficient ball winner and has created opportunities with good vision and the ability to execute actions to bring teammates into the game.

Last night, when the team had the ball, she was supposedly playing as a number 10 or AM in a rotating midfield triangle, defensive and attacking.

In the past Gorry has been more comfortable as a deep lying playmaker, DM, or as Pim termed - a controlling midfielder. Instead Joe M used Kennedy for a lot of graft in breaking up attacks and winning hard balls, plus aerial power, like Jedinak used to do for the Socceroos.

Gorry, last night filled the role that Fowler or Van Egmond usually do in a more advanced position. Because China committed so many players forward, and due to their effective pressing in BPO, Gorry, and Kerr in particular were starved of the ball a bit, particularly in the first half.

For all the hard work and closing down of space that Kerr did, I was delighted to see her score that amazing goal from such an acute angle, whilst running at high speed too. Fantastic!
I also liked Fowler on the right.

I think the Matildas two weaknesses are vulnerability to counter attacks and a lack of quality in midfield that stifles ball progression.

Kennedy at DM helped with the former. Cooney-Cross's quality with Fowler dropping from high to support helped with the latter. Gorry had a great game pressing also.

I think that collectively lifted the teams performance.

can our girls retain the ball longer than 2/3 pass's coming up ?
Let alone make most of their pass's stick ?
Win most of the 2nd/50/50 balls ?
Dictate midfield ?
Will they get the ball to Kerr's feet how many times in good position ?
How many times hold play/possession in the Japan half ?
Kerr was asking to come off after her goal saying she's spent.
Sure she'll be pumped to play like no other but their defense only let in their first GA of the tournament GF now @ 21.

SK Jap stats are damming and expected imo and we know the score should have been over 5 !
23 shots to 7
9 to 4 on target
67% possession to 33.
7 corners to 1 !

2 1/2 days recovery for them, Riverting viewing from 8pm Saturday.
Bring it on looking forward to it.

Japan ran out 4-1 winners over South Korea in their Women's Asian Cup semi-final to set up a final against the Matildas at Stadium Australia on Saturday, with Kang Chae-rim's goal in the 78th minute the only goal conceded by Japan throughout the entirety of their campaign.

Got to remember it's a massive home occasion for our team and they have a lot of big game experience plus a few veterans may be done after this so they're going to go all out. I think Australia need to attack and press and upset Japan's rhythm.

Very impressed with Japan last night, don't think we have a hope in hell after watching the last two of our games. Maybe if we play a perfect game, we might go to penalties
I'll be amazed we hold out 90 + ET to pens.

I was there last night & they were just awesome, the passing so slick, the first touch, the movement, the transition, they were miles ahead of Sth Korea.
This is what football is all about, they play 'jogo bonito', we can only HOPE to hold out & get a special from Sam Kerr.
If Sam Kerr played with this Japanese team, she would score 3-4 goals every game.

yep, I've watched a couple of games.
Cut above here in Asia thats for sure - imagine having mens and womens NT's this good.
Why I mentioned earlier post how many times can we get the ball to Kerr let alone ball transitions.
They are a yard faster.

Japan will really test the Matildas.I only watched the first half and was very taken with their pressing game, their passing, pace and ability to find space. We have Kerr who is still a terrific striker even if she is past her peak but need to give her the ball in areas where she can threaten the Japanese goal.

Uzbekistan and the Philippines currently scoreless at the half in the first of the Women's Asian Cup play-in matches on the Gold Coast.

Philippines defeated Uzbekistan 2-0 in the first Women's Asian Cup play-in match on the Gold Coast courtesy of goals to Angie Beard in the 47th minute and Jaclyn Sawicki in the 52nd minute to qualify for the 2027 Women's World Cup, with Uzbekistan going through to the first phase of inter-confederation playoffs.

I did think about World Cup qualifier, but then I thought it was getting too far down the pecking order. I think Asia may have a couple too many spots
