Women's Asian Cup match discussion thread

Chinese Taipei leading India 3-1 in the second half of their group C match but there's a lengthy delay of game as the Indian keeper and captain are being stretchered off following a collision.
 
Knockout stage matchups for the Women's Asian Cup have now been confirmed at the conclusion of the group stage, and are as follows:

Quarterfinals
  • South Korea v Uzbekistan
  • Japan v Philippines
  • China v Chinese Taipei
  • Matildas v North Korea
Play-in matches and semi-finals
  • South Korea/Uzbekistan v Japan/Philippines
  • Matildas/North Korea v China/Chinese Taipei

Alanna Kennedy now in a four-way tie in the race for the Golden Boot, with Kiko Seike and Riko Ueki both moving to four goals along with Lani and Myong Yu-jong after scoring in Japan's 4-0 group C win over Vietnam.

I’m predicting all the “home” teams to go through. North Korea to win their playoff. Uzbekistan vs Philippines will be interesting, though I think the Philippines will probably win.

Even if the Matildas lose their quarterfinal to North Korea we still have the play-in match against the loser of China's quarterfinal with Chinese Taipei which determines whether we qualify for the 2027 Women's World Cup directly or have to go through the inter-confederation playoffs so interest isn't going to tank that much.

Ticket sales for the Matilda's game tomorrow night are awful. Given it is at HSF, I thought it would sell out straight away but there are a lot of spare seats still for sale. I am curious to know why.

I am sure organisers were planning/hoping for Australia to play multiple games at Olympic Park to boost crowds and ticket revenue. I was glad they got into the other side of the draw than Japan, and also got some more games out of Sydney. If they had won, they could have had 4 games straight at Homebush. That would be a huge stretch on the pockets of Sydney fans.

With that in mind, I am actually impressed by the non-Australian game crowds. Most of those crowds are still well exceeding crowds for other women's sporting events. To put it into perspective, the Australian women's cricket team played a test match in Perth (which gained quite good media coverage as it was Alyssa Healy's last test) to crowds across the three days of between 2,300 to 3,700 (per day). This is the sort of crowd the lowest games of the Asian Cup are getting, with several fixtures well exceeding that.

If we lose the quarter we need Pepe out and a big squad revamp. Even though he won the league he was relatively poor at Lyon as that was the only trophy he won (when he really shoulda won the Coupe de France and at least knocked Arsenal out of the UCL). Oh, and it’s okay to have a foreign coach. Idk why the FA insists on it. They picked Popa for the Roos and he wasn’t even the best Aussie option.

I hope people aren't waiting around for deals or freebies. Once they start those freebies everyone then expects it.

To be fair the AFC doesn't have a mandatory stand-down period for concussion like Football Australia so Steph Catley and Hayley Raso were both in contention to make the playing list for our quarterfinal against North Korea before being ruled out by Montemurro the day before.

I don’t think we can change our squad either because they aren’t goalies. We’ve picked them, now we have to keep them. Teagan Micah was clearly sus at Lyon as she wasn’t being picked for them squad at all in the weeks leading up to the Asian Cup, though I understand picking her as our goalkeeping depth sucks. Same goes for Jada Whyman who was injured, came back for half a cup game for AIK then got injured again. However, you also have Kyra Cooney-Cross who wasn’t playing at Arsenal in those last few weeks (initially due to family reasons but then an injury) yet still got picked. We picked Emily van Egmond who’s in quite poor form for Leicester and Michelle Heyman who isn’t scoring anymore. We’ve picked several players we haven’t even thought about using yet. It’s not acceptable. And nobody, not the clubs, the players not the staff, warned us about their recent injuries.

Had I have known we would be completely fucked with injuries I would’ve changed more than two players (my initial thought when the squad came out). I would’ve also probably picked a replacement for KCC, Ras and Steph. I doubt we even had a reserve player list though, and if we did I bet it was Chloe Berryhill, Emily Gielnik, Aivi Luik and Kyah Simon lol. The FA is a joke.
