I always tell people this when talking about woso. It’s also one of the many reasons why more people, men and women, should also watch this great sport!

This is probably part of it. But even then women's football hasn’t adopted other features of American sport so the culture isn’t really Americanised.

Finish first you get an easier quarter but a harder semi (Japan). Finish second you get a harder quarter and an easier semi.

As it stands the Matildas' last group stage match against South Korea will be winner takes all to decide who tops the group, and finishing first is a big deal because it determines whether we get one of the two best third-placed sides from groups B or C, or the runner up from group B in the quarterfinals.

If the Matildas lose in the quarterfinals we still have a chance at qualifying for the 2027 Women's World Cup through the play-in matches though.
