A thread for match discussion during the 2026 Women's Asian Cup. This will be the main match discussion thread used for the entirety of the Matildas' campaign on home soil so please use this thread to avoid cluttering other threads.

The Matildas starting XI for Women's Asian Cup opening day against the Philippines has been named. Chloe Lincoln makes her tournament debut between the sticks, as do Winonah Heatley and Clare Hunt. Sam Kerr leads the forward line as captain, with Gorry, Wheeler and Emily van Egmond part of a three-strong midfield.

no kcc and fowler in the xi

saving them? Fitness issues? Tactical? Better players in the xi?

Possibly rotation. The Philippines aren’t very good.

Angie Beard starting for the Philippines. Born and raised in Australia, plays for Brisbane Roar and a former Matilda herself.

I assume we’re putting Steph Catley at left back then? No idea why Emily van Egmond’s starting, again Daniela Galić deserved the spot more. Maybe we’re tryna give her those caps to break the record for the group stage to avoid fucking up against Japan.

Man, why is the time we finally get a chance for revenge on iran in a footy match and its during a revolution

It's not like I can say to my Iranian friends right now "haha sucked in!"

Iran’s women’s football scene should get better if the IR is overthrown. Not to get too political but they banned women from stadiums until FIFA told them they couldn’t.

indeed, whether someone thinks the iranian revolution and western involvement is a good thing or bad thing, it is a big thing which will colour how we all feel about the game.

is this the first major game for woman and men against iran?

We'll definitely be going for a back four with Steph Catley at left back and Ellie Carpenter at right back as expected, but even if Emily van Egmond starts every group game she'll still be one short of equalling Clare Polkinghorne's record and two games away from breaking the record outright.
