Women's Asian Cup general discussion thread

The APL will have to do a lot more promoting before Matildas fans become ALW supporters.
There needs to be individual player promotion so that they become household names similar to that of Kerr, Fowler, Raso et al. Individual clubs need to be freed from ‘head office’ control in terms of promoting their ‘stars’ so that fans feel much closer to them.
The fact is at the moment the ALW is a burden for the clubs and, seemingly the APL itself.
I think the best way to do that at first is so focus on the Matildas who do play in the A-League, or to remind players that Matildas are born in the A-League. Even if a fifth of Tillies fans went to ALW games we would be in great hands.

My main issue is the lack of full professionalism though. We need a fully pro ALW. We’ve got some great players in the ALW and they deserve full contracts before going overseas.

During the Matildas' Women's Asian Cup campaign there was a 'built in the Ninja A-League' advertising campaign which tried to remind people that everyone on the 26-player list for the Tillies started out in the Dub but there's only so much the APL can do unfortunately.

how do any of you expect support/crowd growth whilst the game keeps being divided ?
Whilst there keeps being this 2 channel football outlook you will keep wishing what could be more and come up with washy solutions.

What do you mean?

I don't see or recognise the growth linage you would expect from where your main schools of fish are to APL/W.
From grass roots through to the top HSF - there is NO link "sync" from grass roots/NPL with the APL/W.
The biggest school of fish are in Clubland HSF not the event types being regulars even though they are needed to make some revenue.
Were a bitza/pock a poop kind of game.
Most major sports have linage from youth to top flight - like P/R you could say, thats what gravitates supporters watching X player come through the ranks - like a go karting prodigy going through the motor racing ranks to F1 for eg.
Put it another way business wise - say your a rich ogarlord and FA/APL was up for a RFQ - whilst your going through due diligence you'd see what a utter mess the whole football business model is from top to bottom - you'd see such mis alignment you'd offer feck all and once you got it you'd put a broom through it full stop.

That’s just window dressing, there’s a lot more they could do such as profiling ALW players particularly those who have Matildas caps (at any level) so that potential fans start to link players and clubs with the Matildas.

BA Boom !
Same applies to Mens.
You got to build bottom UP not TOP down with a whim and prayer of token advertising.
There is no purpose just window dressing.

Whenever Matildas playing lists for any international window are named they always specify which players come from the Dub though, and of course throughout the season there is already some profiling of the 'ones to watch' in the Tillies farm system but much of the fan base will only identify with the more well-known players like Sam Kerr and Caitlin Foord as opposed to one they've never heard about.

I’m saying while the growth isn’t enough yet, the growth is there. Pre-World Cup the interest in the ALW was pretty low.

I think it’s a global problem with players watching national team games but not club games though. Millions of people watched the Lionesses at the Euros but most WSL teams only get a few thousand to games. It’s even worse in France: people watch Les Bleues but the Première Ligue usually gets ALW-level attendances despite it being a Big Six league and France being a more populous country.

Where is the ‘Tillies farm system’ advertised (for want of a better word)?

HSF and reb974 - to me you miss the point.
HSF the interest in ALW isn't great imo after 10+yrs of womens football growth and riding on the back of hype out Tillys.
The crowds are nothing to boast of in ALW land though should be flowing on by the club land growth.
Ofcourse people gravitate take notice of the "high profile" players men/women - I had to look up the Dub, there you go.
What is the viewership of the Dub ?
The focus needs to be shifted towards local Clubs dangling the carrots to excel Upwards, people take notice of locals improving/standing out going up levels and knocking on the door of tilly selection.

great from such a low base but you want those increase's at the turn stiles not from the dam couch.
OR is the game becoming a stay at home viewership ahead.

I also had no idea what “The Dub” is…….
there in lies the reach and wonders of the internet.......
I seriously had to look it up as mentioned - yes hand up I'm no APLeagues regular viewer but I know I'm far more invested in the game than many of those who would frequent a website.
Is the Dub short for anything ?
It gets me thinking where football especially Clubs who are not professional and where this is going.
As mentioned are we building up the "couch" supporter more than the local clubs.
Throw in APL and W business's - do they end up just surviving on their broadcast deals ahead ? for more and more will just watch on line no ?
What of the add on revenue Clubs get from ground sales, ie food/drinks/apparel etc.
Will everything just be online in years ahead ?
What happens to local clubs without that additional important income - they'd be stuffed without it.

I can appreciate that those who are fully invested in women’s football would know where to access news and information but it’s the casual fans that need to be reached on a much broader platform than is currently available.

I mean it’s better than ever before plus again it’s a global issue. Première Ligue games in France get similar attendances.

Does that mean we shouldn’t bother because, you know, they don’t get many people at games in France.
