Women's Asian Cup general discussion thread

I feel so sorry for what’s going on. I hope the crowd was sitting for the Iranian anthem to show solidarity. And more importantly I hope the players are okay and able to seek asylum.
Mind you in their boots its a catch22/double edged sword call.
Say you stay seek asylum, as we have read their families will be threatened - just terrible circumstance to be in.
I'd have to go back for the sake of family.

It's not as simple for the Iranian team to just claim poltical asylum in Australia. Sure, they're easily going to pass the requirements, at least in my mind, but....

For a start it would be a huge cultural adjustment for the girls and secondly, and more importantly they all have lives back in their homeland.

They have parents, brothers and sisters. And they'll be worried about their futures.

The IRGC could make life very difficult for the girl's families and friends. Especially if this becomes a major international incident, which it will if they all claimed asylum.

It's a horrendously difficult situation for the team. My head is aching just thinking about it and it certainly brings a tear to the eye....

So who would we rather China or North Korea?
would it matter ? Joe pick a better midfield for eg start CC - girls wake up lift your game, move faster, win the 2nd balls, play with conviction, hit your marks with pass's.

I don’t think the problem is in midfield necessarily, we play a totally disjointed game of football but come up with the goods when it matters. After all our leading goal scorer is potentially a midfielder.

Yes agree with dis jointed good description - maybe our top RB delivers to our goal scoring midfielder with precision each time :)

Five Iranian players are in a safe house after escaping from their hotel on the Gold Coast. Iranian state media are calling them traitors and they could face jail time or even execution if they return to Iran. Tony Burke has confirmed that they may stay in Australia, possibly meaning they will now play in the A-League or NPL. Donald Trump has confirmed after a phone call with Anthony Albanese that "the rest are on their way". All five have removed their hijabs too.

According to exiled dissident Reza Pahlavi, the son of the last Iranian Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, has identified the players as captain and forward Zahra Ghanbari (played for Persepolis), midfielders Mona Hamoudi and Fatemeh Pasandideh (both played for Bam Khatoon), defender Atefeh Ramazanzadeh (also played for Bam Khatoon) and midfielder Zahra Sarbali (played for Gol Gohar Sirjan). All five played in the Iranian Kowsar Women's League (IKWL), the top division of Iranian women's football.

Seven players now:

It’s understood the rest flew from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur. Presumably KL is the stopover for Tehran unless they’re seeking asylum there.

I feel we put those Iranian women in danger and a poor position, all for PR /behalf of trump who wanted to look a good guy after bombing the school. It was way too publicised.

Only 2 of the players remain. Only commenting here as it was connected to the tournament

I wouldn’t say it was for Trump’s PR but I do think we spoke about it too much. There’s a very real chance that the players who returned could be imprisoned, tortured or even killed.

Solidarity is the best we can do at the moment. Free Iran from Ayatollahism.
