Vive La France: French Football discussion thread

In women's football news, the Coupe LFFP final is set! Lyon vs PSG, being held in Abidjan (yes, in Ivory Coast). Teagan Micah will miss it because of the Asian Cup.
 
Lyon just beat Marseille 6–2 away in the women's league (the Première Ligue). Lyon are obviously the undisputed best team in France by far, but Marseille are a huge club.

They only got promoted last season and are ninth, meaning they’ll stay up, but ninth for one of France’s biggest clubs isn’t good enough. Unfortunately we know they don’t care about women: not only do they not invest in their women’s team, they also signed Mason Greenwood for their men’s team.

This is an interesting thread... but unfortunately it's also a reminder of European attitudes towards Australians.

Because when Ligue 1's TV deal with beIN Sports lapsed, and it first went to DAZN and subsequently moved in-house (because DAZN refused to pay for it, which is something we need to be conscious of in Australia)... I sent several emails to Ligue 1 asking why Australia wasn't included in the new renegotiated TV broadcast deal.

All of those emails went unanswered, despite me knowing exactly who to send them to. I later heard from a source that Ligue 1 simply didn't care if viewers were watching in Australia. (Worth remembering that the entire league, including a highlights show and a lunchtime Sunday kick-off, used to be broadcast on beIN).

We can watch other football on Sunday nights in Australia now (the Dutch Eredivisie, for example)... but Ligue 1 have made it clear they think we're irrelevant.

well that pretty much confirms my feeling towards L1 - barring the exception of some brilliant players that have come to be their League is irrevelant and I'm sure I am not alone thinkign as such..

I actually think BeIN Sports will be gone from Australia in a couple of years.

Once their Bundesliga, Serie A and La Liga contracts are finished their content will be pretty thin on the ground.

You're likely going to see those 3 competitions on the DAZN app.

And you'll likely have to pay for each competition individually.

As for Ligue Un in Australia....

The tv rights for APAC and the wider SE Asian region are held by a Sports Rights company called Infront Sport and Marketing an internationally renowned outfit who have an office in Singapore.

Infront onsell the rights into various markets in this region...

For example in Hong Kong Ligue Un is shown on BeIN.

In Singapore its on StarHub.

BeIN Australia didn't purchase because it is more than likely gradually winding down it's operations.

Nobody else broadcasting football in Australia would be in the market for Ligue Un, unless it was packaged with something else, more recognisable to Australian football fans such as Serie A.

My interest in French football stems from my enduring love of France.

Since I went there as a kid camping with the parents.

Then on a 10 day school trip when I was 12.

It's a lifelong live affair for me and regardless of how good the domestic competition is in France I love it unconditionally....

I'm not so sure about that.

Not only did beIN Australia visit Europe last year to discuss a raft of broadcast rights, but they had a vested interest in covering a league in which the flagship club is nominally owned by the same state. As far as I'm aware, they made every effort to re-sign a new Ligue 1 deal.

Don't forget beIN also holds broadcast rights to a host of other sports, including the entire year-long runs of both the ATP and WTA tours.

DAZN have been jettisoning broadcast rights all over the world - Ligue 1, the Belgian Pro League, FIFA Club World Cup rights in South Korea - so I'm not sure they're in an inherently stronger position.

Time will tell, given a bunch of rights deals are soon to expire, but I've seen nothing as yet to suggest beIN don't want to be here.

Well I think you've been misinformed....

As I said the Ligue Un broadcast rights in this region are held by Infront Sports and Marketing. They have those rights until 2029.

beIN Australia would have to purchase from them the international rights holder and not directly from LPF.

Infront's Singapore office is where an Australian broadcaster would go to discuss or negotiate these rights and not Europe.


beIN Hong Kong shows Ligue Un. Same parent company, different jurisdiction but both within the Asia Pacific region..There are several other countries in this region showing Ligue Un, many of them much smaller markets than Australia.

To.suggest that Ligue Un is not on beIN Aus is because Europeans care about Australia or NZ then you're just being silly or your 'source' is just being silly...

As far as beIN Aus goes...

I believe that the company's Australia operations have been neglected. Especially since the 3 channel deal with Foxtel was allowed to lapse.

Its beIN Connect app looks like something out of 2016


I get my Ligue Un coverage from a "third party" on demand service. It uses beIN North America as it's source. beIN North America's broadcast of Ligue Un and other competitions is in 1080p/50fps. This is the standard for most sports streaming services around the world.

beIN Australia is in 720p/25 fps

Probably the worst sports streaming quality out there. For a company with the resources of beIN Media Group tells us it's them who aren't interested much in Australia.

I believe they'll have exited Australia within 3 years....

As for DAZN - not sure they're in an inherently stronger position?

Well they've just invested the thick end of $3.5 billion in Australia buying it's one and only pay tv platform and all the sports rights that go with that. They're far more interested in Australia than beIN Media Group...

Although I think that initially they'll keep the Foxtel platform and Kayo as is but eventually migrate all the sport to their DAZN app.

An app that looks like it belongs in the mid 2020's and not a decade ago!

What I like about the 2 players here is both were major Juve players.

The Zidane blog - got to say what a friggin player, admire his stealth lethal play alot - one of their best and I enjoy attacking mids like him.
Wonder how he would fit in todays low bloc game ? imo as long as he's given free reign he'd rip defense's apart still.
Interesting he has a huge black mark against him (to some) like another similar and another frenchman.
I mean Zidane wasn't the type to really over react on the pitch but that ET WC Final to headbutt Materazzi was a brutal way for him to end.
Sure I'm glad the Azzurri won but I get why he reacted.

So my other french Legend who suffered a big black unfortunate mark is Platini.
More my younger day era and playing for Juve a big tick those days in SerieA.
Another amazing gifted attacking French player - known as the King back there and inspiration what became later The Platini gens under him becoming the force ala Henry/Anelka/Trézéguetall etc....
It really saddenned me his FIFA/Blatter downfall even though acquitted later.
What a NT career - 72 games for 41 goals ! a AM !
Juve 147 games 68 goals.
IMO again I think he'd cut the mustard today as well - you just block that much ability a full 90mins.

I just washed my mouth out and yep he would say as such lol.....
Can't deny his arrogance it rang true and he did talk the talk, hate to say I like his game but a terrible red shirt - big diff compared to the other 2 he didn't have a golden relationship playing in their NT to them.
