u23 team of the season

Update:
Beach's rating takes a hammering. He has been letting in less goals than his xgot conceded showing elite shot stopping abilities, but today he let in 6 goals but only conceded 2.4 xgot, undoing his entire overperformance for the season!

We have seen a few more debuts and 2005 born kids continue to dominate. Typically players who make a very high level after playing in Australia domestically tend to to play 20 odd games a season by the time they are u19 (aka 2007 born) dominate by the time they hit either u21 or u22. So far we have (with dominant players in brackets)

2003: 16 (6)
2004: 16 (6)
2005: 30 (7)
2006: 23 (3)
2007: 13 (3)
2008: 5 (0)
2009: 4 (0)

The player with the highest ceilings appear to me to be Kutleshi who is a giant for his age but looks very technically gifted and defensively solid for his age, Herrington and Mehmeti look promising too

Thanks as always Grazor 🙏

2005 with 30 is pretty insane. Don’t think we’ve ever seen that for any year of birth before.

2008 on the other hand appears to be tracking way behind. I wonder if it’ll be kind of skipped, with 2009 overtaking shortly.

Yeah i have heard that 07/08 are slightly weaker than 05/06 but things improve again for 09/10

No one starting regularly born 08 is a concern

Those born in 2008 would only be 17 or 18 so maybe some younger NPL guys will come in.

Interestingly at Sydney FC have our youngest player ever in the women's: Willa Pearson (born 2011). She's 15 (debuted at 14) and a regular starter for Sydney and a contender for our Player of the Season! Based on that she could turn out to be world-class!

Time to update the team of the season so far

----------------------------------------------------Beach (2003, 7.1)---------------------------------------------------------------
-Rawlins (2004, 7.1)---Herrington (2007,7.1)-Kikianis (2005,7.2)--Pantazopoulos (2003,7.0)-
---------------------------------------Okon (2005,7.3)-Alagich(2003,7.4)-------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------Badolato (2005,7.7)------------------------------------------------------
--------Taylor (2004,7.2)---------------------Jovanovic (2005,7.1)---------------------(Dukuly 2003,7.2)----

Team still skews quite young and there are a few young players knocking on the door in Freney, Youlley and Dobson. Dylan Scicluna and Younis are on an upwards trajectory too
2008 looks a bad year to be honest with 2009 catching up a bit. 2005 year was the year that won the asian cup and they clearly standout over other years

Current numbers with dominant players in brackets

2003: 16 (6)
2004: 16 (7)
2005: 32 (11)
2006: 23 (3)
2007: 14 (2)
2008: 5
2009: 4

This is how last year looks for comparison

u23 -18 -> 16
u22 - 19 -> 16
u21 - 27 -> 32
u20 - 25 -> 23
u19 - 19 -> 14
u18 - 6 -> 5
u17 - 3 -> 4

average score for the team of the season 7.3->7.2

Based on Sofascore ratings, presuming players that left midseason don't count and assuming a 4-3-3 lineup:

Men's U23 Team of the Season

Thoughts? Personally I'm amazed how we have one men's player but two women's players despite the obvious fact that the girls are having our worst season ever and the boys are challenging for the title.

Some positions were hard to pick. Had to scroll down a fair bit for a men's goalkeeper and a women's right winger for example (which is how I got Milly Cassar lol, but Pat Beach is a good choice to be fair). A lot of nearlies (i.e 24-year-olds) too.

Cutoff for u23 is born on or after jan 1 2003 so natta wouldnt count

I also exclude nz players (since im interested in oz development) and make sure players are in position to garner the true strength of the team, so wouldnt put badalato at striker

Good points, wasn't sure about the proper positions of some (e.g which side for CBs, so I had to check). Only one Kiwi each in the men's and women's teams above. If 24 was allowed then our (Sydney's) very own brick wall Heather Hinz would be the highest rated for the women though she's American.

Anyway, you can play around with this on Sofascore (the website and presumably also the app). If you go to a league's page and then click the stats tab you can find the best players by rating or specific statistics, and you can also sort it by specific positions (by specific I mean instead of just defender you sort it by left back, centre back and right back). Only shows the top few though.

Great to see robinson make his debut
Warshawsky too, a couple of young keepers to make our future keeping stocks look more promising
really hope DPC gets a loan

Interesting we have some hard data behind the statement I've heard from a lot of scouts that we are technically a high level but become athletically remedial

in some physical metrics, a league is almost off the charts
