U20 WC 2025 Australia match thread

I remember him pushing for more influence from Brazil which was interesting.
The specific emphasis on 🇧🇷‘s ⚽️ing methodology aside, his whole thing really was just to change our approach to the game as a nation to something less-wedded to the ‘traditional’ 🇦🇺-sporting characteristics ie. physicality and raw willpower. It was about recognising that those aforementioned attributes by themselves, w/o skill and brains to complement them, will only ever get us so far.

I'm with @Richie on hoppy beer
As a founding member of Tas Craft Beer Assoc, it is a challenge to find sweeter beers, sometimes malty, to satisfy the likes of you and Richie!

Richie liked an English Red Ale at Endeavour brewery on The Rocks. Plus I steer drinkers to English Browns, Hefeweizens and Cerveja Mexican style beers!

Matthews is a year too old

The missing players who are either injured or getting game time in europe are

Younis (brondby)
Irankunda
Waddingham (injured)
Walker (dual national)
Lino (injured)
Skoko (dual national)

Powerhouses like italy are of course missing more as we covered on the pod

Even south korea were missing yang who is arguably doing better than itankunda and is born 2006
Thanks, Grazor.

Interesting.

Think an apology is in order, dont you.
I think both @BA81 & @ashtongate should be issue apologies in all honesty, this hostility and demonisation of new fans by some within the game needs to stop.

There's no point in people pissing and moaning that mainstream society is indifferent to the game when those who do show an interest in becoming fans of the game are demonised and shown hostility by so called welded on fans of the game.

We also had a few players who would have been first selected in the starting eleven, who weren’t there.

Irankunda, Leonard.

Who else is young enough, but for various reasons they were not selected?

Matthews?
Find the timing of Anthony Pavlesic deciding to play youth football for Croatia a little strange. Most likely would have been first keeper for Australia at an U20 World Cup. Surely that is an experience you would think long and hard about foregoing?

I want a crisp session beer. Give me a lager/dry/pilsener any day.

That felt like he made the decision with his heart because I doubt the playing opportunities are there. I can live with that.

I thought the exact same thing, especially considering he was captain for the U17s Asian Cup qualifiers a few years ago.

Once he signed permanently for NK Rudes and based himself in Croatia it all made sense, which as Quicky says we can all live with.

With respect though, can you really blame the ‘welded-on fans of the game’ who’ve seen&heard it all w/regards to “mainstream” 🇦🇺‘s demonisation of ⚽️ in this country for being just a little bit curious/suspicious of where such sudden ‘newcomer-interest’ for the game comes from every so often❓ You do have to see it from their perspective as well, not that it justifies what transpired in this thread of course, but to each their own.

Put it this way: I care precisely less than nothing for the sport of cricket..BUT, nonetheless, I definitely respect it enough to leave it to its patricians and not subject them to my utter noob-ness on the topic, if that makes sense.

BA 81 only questioned the authenticity of Richie.

The other suggested Richie leave the thread, because he deemed him to have insufficient football knowledge.

Richie probably knows more about cricket than anybody on the forum. However, he never tells others not to post about cricket! Instead he welcomes their contribution.

Yep you need the brains and skills as well, the physicality and raw willpower is not enough to compete at the top level.

It’s a shame the narrative hasn’t been set for this so we can shift our focus so we continue to improve.

Unfortunately too many people in this country pin their hopes on kids set to be the next Reece Walsh(NRL) or Bailey Smith(AFL) taking up ‘the sokkah’ instead just in time.

Even if it happened, they’d only be as good as the ⚽️ing education they’d go on to receive…and here in 🇦🇺 that’s much more likely to be Leigh Broxham’s than Lionel Messi’s💡

Argentina 4-0 Nigeria

Pretty much what I would’ve expected..

We bet Nigeria 3-2 in a pre tournament friendly, so Argentina just a level above at this stage.

The Argentina Mexico QF will be a cracking game.

Anyone know how to watch these games?

Decent viewing, I haven't had any issues watching group stage matches in Aus

LOL!
Nobody posts about cricket except Decentric and Richie.

I thought Richie's comments about the vs Cuba game were so silly and ill informed I got carried away.

I've followed Australian soccer for a long time, and quite frankly I find that cricket nuts who watch the occasional soccer match (probably at D's urging!) don't really benefit the game in the long term.

I remember a while back decentric promised a lot of cricket fans would start posting about soccer. Some of us disagreed- and its hasn't happened thankfully.

Let the forum grow naturally, don't force it.

"Slave - where's my bloody soapbox?"

That is the KORB mentality that I would like to see gone.

This is not a Forum By Invitation and much as some like the idea it is not an elitist group - it is a welcoming and accepting Public forum. Anyone who wants to honestly comment on something about football has the right and freedom to do so.

Who cares if someone misses the point when they make a comment - that's where members can respectfully refute anything they disagree with - and better yet with the courtesy to explain why they think differently.

We aren't born knowing about football and our first observations may not meet with the personal acceptance levels of some experts. Who bloody cares? You can use your greater knowledge, without appearing as a guru or droning tosser, to simply make relevant comments and guide a noob to understand something a little better.

What does it hurt to be respectful or give a little time and effort to acknowledge someone who has made the effort to think and post?

For anyone relatively new to football, what are they going to see that draws them back? It is precisely those moments of play like Richie mentioned where a player glides through opposition players or where a defender makes that critical tackle when it looks like all is lost that captures the spirit of a sports fan. I applaud Richie's observation and braveness to post it.

@Richie - I wouldn't be looking for an apology mate. It was merely a reaction at the time and not worth taking under your skin ;). Post on as you see fit.

"Now Slave - put this bloody soapbox where I can find it quicker next time".
