U20 WC 2025 Australia match thread

I'm still not sure if we have qualified for the next round?

Any news?

After that stats break down, I don't think we did quite enough to draw with Italy. They were the better side. I can accept not qualifying.

We looked good against Cuba, but haven't watched the final 20 mins yet.
Sorry, the laughing symbol was a mistake.
We were shocking in the last 20 mins against Cuba. With the game opening up we had chance after chance but could not score. Even when two forwards against one defender.

We did not get out of the group. The game against Argentina really hurt us in exposing our flaws but also copping four goals. We really needed to smash Cuba but poor finishing and some excellent keeping thwarted our bid to be a third best qualifier for R16.It will be interesting to see how far Argentina and Italy progress in the tournament

In the end, we needed at least 4 points to progress and we fell short. So even if those goals had gone in against Cuba and we'd won 8-1, we still wouldn't have gone through. Likewise, if we didn't concede the two very late goals against Argentina and had only lost 1-2, it also wouldn't have made any difference. Even if both scenarios occurred, we'd still only have 3 points and would not have gone through. Ultimately, I guess the result we needed was to draw with Italy in the opening game in what was a relatively even game that we could have gotten something out of, decided in the end by a penalty to Italy. All in all, it felt like so many missed opportunities by this group.

So it's OK to say "I despise the A League", but "stick to cricket" is bad?
in an ideal world we all sing kumbaya. But yes I get why it can be frustrating hearing the a league bagged, but in the end if someone supports an npl club and upset there is no pathway back to the top - particularly since there was a racial element to the a league revolution.- I tend to be pretty sympathetic

Telling a new fan to stick to cricket just seemed unnecessarily unwelcoming to someone new and showing interest to the sport

I'm not a mod btw, just giving my perspective

It was said in extreme exasperation, right after the match.
Saying "I despise the A League" is trolling almost everyone on the forum. My unfortunate remark was aimed at just one person!

You’re assuming that Richie guy is a legit poster - frankly IMO he’s giving multi vibes, prob NoMates’ or even Lupi’s handiwork for all we know…

i strongly doubt it. But even if people come on as a multi and the follow the rules and are friendly, i dont care if they were a troll in the past.

Hindsight tells us it was the Italy game with the Bennie miss and the Jovanovic miss from memory - both wide when need to put away in a world cup.

If either of those goes in we're through even without the Benny Hill misses against Cuba.

Still a good outcome for this group. It's been 12 years since we last qualified. Asia is not Oceania at youth level.

A lot of moments cost us but overall we were in the mix. the Italy match we could have got something. Argentina outplayed us, but it blew out at the end chasing a result, cuba we could have put away more.

I don't have the data, but I expect this group has had a lot more first team experience than previous cohorts. The frustrating circumstance being the A league starting so late meant they were underdone at the wc.

Ultimately success for a cohort should be judged on how many graduate to play for the socceroos. I think there are probably 5 or 6 who could make that jump, which would be quite remarkable.

+ 20 odd since we won a game. We had moments and opportunities in each game. We'll have learnt a lot.

Think it will be another 15 years before we ever qualify for another U20 World Cup!.How can u be Asian U20 champions and preform like that?.Most of the squad will end up being NPL bench warmers.

Like proper development of skills at junior levels instead of pace and power.
We can never compete with teams from South America and Europe until this deficit is addressed

The tournament we learned the good where we did well in whilst learning the bad where we need to do better, it’s always important to have that right mindset we should not be satisfied until we continue to improve at all levels.

Again the people running the sport should take a hard look at where we are doing well, what we are lacking and where we need to improve otherwise we won’t learn from this experience.

Also bring back the national youth league and start the season earlier to help the players prepare in the best possible way, I also think the game needs a cultural reset on how we view and play the game because the way the likes of Argentina and Italy play it feels like a different world to how we think and view our football, but anyway that’s another discussion for another day.

That's being said since Adam was a boy.

Even when the Golden Generation was still playing, the late Johnny Warren was saying the same things on the old SBS The World Game show.
