U20 WC 2025 Australia match thread

Italy looks like the game that got away. That first half really should've been ours...
I didn't watch the game only the highlights, Def had our moments going from wot i seen. Now we have a mountain to climb and if it comes down to the game against Cuba well there no pushovers. They really took it to Argentina.

We created 1 extra big chance in the first half than them. But faded in the second half as players seemed to fatigue for some reason. I suspect our fitness isn't strong enough to progress unless cuba suck enough or we upset the argies

Have watched replay of first 45 mins, but not whole game - yet.

Despite conceding the pen, Aus looked good. They knocked the ball around well.

Another comment I’ve seen, is someone saying Okon Jr failed to impose himself. Tend to agree.

Where is Dylan Leonard?

New Caledonia smashed 9-1 by the USA. Its good to see the islanders score a goal something the Aus U20 have yet to do.

Small snapshot of potential with this piece of play. Carries the ball forward, through traffic, maintains possession and passes through the line.

As others have already said, some things to be excited about with this cohort.

I thought okon was super strong on the night but was ball watching, was his defensive contribution week?

From the same twitter account I found this interesting

Thought Musa was pretty ineffective, though his replacement caputo was ineffective too. This might explain why, critiquing his off the ball work while in possession

Okon I believe. Looks alright there. The frustration is he's a bit like Francois that he'll go missing for periods and look good in the closing stages only due to the frantic nature of trying to get a goal.

He's got to control the game on his terms.

Yes agree with this re Okon-Engstler. I watched the whole first half and bits of the second and there's no doubt if he could learn to dictate the tempo of our play and hopefully therefore the game, he would go to another level.

The kid is 20 and is a baller with bundles of talent no doubt.

I remember Mooy had the technique and game smarts to master rhthym changes.

Just being able to control the ball, go on a wonder, pass it back and forth for a bit can be super useful. Sometimes the opposition crowd is getting behind their team and making noise, sometimes the team seems rattled, sometimes the opposition has momentum or has brought on dangerous subs. Being able to slow the game down for a minute can be a game changer

Felt our fullbacks were dodgy. I guess Talladira is like Rowles who is a pure defender and can't do too much with the ball. I'd start even go as far as starting Bennie at RWB and have Overy on the left as he's got better movement and skill.

I'm told there are some better fullbacks on the horizon

I think our fullbacks would be above average compared to a few years ago, but other positions have jumped more

perhaps the lack of athleticism in our youth hurts the fb position more than others?

Franco Lino iirc was injured the whole qualifying campaign, if fit, he definitely starts ahead of Talladira.

He was that burst of athleticism we needed getting up and down.

As for RB, Inserra does well over the ground, but not sold on his attacking output yet. Not sure who else is coming through that could do that… Lisolajski is more the same.

rb seems a cursed position for us right now doesn't it?

Wonder if Overy gets some time. He didn't blow my mind in that recent tournament, but didn't look out of place either. Given his younger age it suggests there could be some promise there

Interesting that Morgan was more happy with the second half than the first. He thought italy looked more fatigued than us (I thought the opposite!)
