U20 WC 2025 Australia match thread

Okon went for a sliding tackle late in the first half. He had no second defender anywhere near him.

He missed the challenge and the Aus defence was split wide open on the left. He was forced to commit. However, it was a team unit defensive mistake, or, a player near him not covering who was culpable.

I haven't watched the last 25 mins on replay, but I'm guilty of noticing the big mistakes players make, or the big, outstanding contributions live. Conversely, with the replays one can slow it down and one notices a lot of little, less obvious things.

Esposito and Okon Jr played much better than I thought live. Both had good games.

I think the issues arising are more team unit issues, of regaining team shape more quickly in Defensive Transitions, where the Italians are usually the masters of counter attack.

24/25 v 25/26, with Daniel Bennie's 90 minutes of game time this season coming in the EFL Cup first round and no game time altogether in the league.
That surprises me. So more accurate to say he's gone from getting league minutes to missing the bench entirely. I don't think cup minutes quite compare, particularly early on.

Starting XI for the Young Socceroos' second group game against Argentina has been named, with three changes to the side. James Overy, Jaylan Pearman and Tiago Quintal start in place of Inserra, Jovanovic and Talladira.

I get the feeling Bennie is rusty with no mins for QPR. He needs a continental move and work it through like Bos has.
Bennie still played well.

So often a change of coach occurs at a club, and they have different ideas about current players.

Cuba came back from 2:0 down to draw 2:2 with Italy.

Nice early quick touches. Something a lot of the full team lack.

Love this quick transition. So much better than years of just lobbing it forward or passing it back.

Ref saw a clear shove there. Again stupid weak last man defending.

1:0 Argentina early. Stupid weakness about leaving the ball. What else is the defender thinking of there? You kill the ball.

Fair hard tackle on Badolato. If we do it on the likes of Italy or Argentina they'll jump and scream and win a free kick.

I'm glad of this positive forward play. High risk of interceptions though. Feels rushed and frantic.

Good pressing sees Australia get possession and a ball is whipped across and stopped dead and a struggle can't see Overy sneak a shot away. Still promising. Toure seeking more of the ball. Hall with a stupid pass and catches the ensuing shot.

Good save by Hall from the free kick. Hall needs a League 2 to 6th tier loan to face men.

Overy looks good given his younger age and being played out of position.

Esposito heads onto roof of net after a wayward punch by the keeper. Indicative of the campaign so far.

Sarco with boot in Kikianis's face. An Argentine would go down like being shot if they suffered that. Accidental but the boot has no business there.

Quintal you wizard! 1:1. Risky ball to Argentina defender sees a stall, tackle and Quintal can lob it in. It's being challenged. Looked a fair duel.
