Post here if you're somewhere not here, you've just got back or you're heading off there.

--------------------------------------------------------------8<-------------------------------------------------------------

I climbed this the other day. It's Mt Ishizuchi. It's on Shikoku island, Japan.

Spent 3 days in Tokyo, 1 day in Osaka and then hired a car from there for the next 10 days on Shikoku island away from the maddening throng. Would highly recommend. We were practically the only white people in some of these towns most days.

Tokyo -> bullet train to Osaka -> rental car to Tokushima, Kochi, Shimanto, Uchiko, Fukoyama, Osaka -> bullet train to Tokyo.

As for Japan will definitely visit again. Next time for a month. Clean, organised, cheap, delicious beers, fantastic scenery, no jet lag, there in 8 hours and the food was just sensational. You could eat in 3 different restaurants a day for a month and not eat the same thing twice.

Just brilliant. Cannot wait to go back though next time will get out of Tokyo ASAP. It's good but it's like any other huge city. (I'm not a huge city bloke.)

Car $70 / day (Petrol $1.75 litre.)
Side dishes $3-$5
Main meals $10
Beers in restaurants $6-$8 for a 500ml bottle
Craft beers $8-$10
Bullet train from Tokyo to Osaka $145 one way.

Also it was quite warmish. Low 30's in Tokyo and late 20's on that island and that was October. (High humidity too.) It must be a killer in mid-summer.

Fantastic, you'll love it.

We were talking about going to Chile for the Christmas holidays/January but geez it's expensive to get there. From what I can figure out only 2 airlines fly there from Australia unless you want to go via the US. $3k per person at least.

Yes Japan been on the bucket list for a long time, look forward to it !

I'm long time qantas devotee but its costing as expected and linking Latam to Vegas from there.
$5635.00 return ! cattle class fingers crossed for the upgrade - thank christ biz paying.
Yer qantas Syd/Auckland > Santiago right over the pacific makes for direct route.
Latam is good airline fyi if you can get better deals.
Santiago is brilliant and its surrounds, get a car, the Andes are just half hour or so drive, amazing.
During winter staying in hotels there you feel you can nearly touch the snow tops !
Head to the coast Valpariso isn't that far as well - great vibe and activities but look out for pick pockets etc...
Venezulans are causing lots of petty tourist crimes.
Luv the vibes/the food/the vino is superb.
I think tsf has mentioned been there in past threads for funnily we have eaten in similar or same places.

Love Japan, have only visit once but had a great time. Bullet train unreal, everyone friendly and keen to help a lost Australian. Got to a Gamba Osaka game, great fans in an awesome stadium.

I work in the travel industry and deal with airlines daily, so my opinions of them will vary from the average punter. Qantas are a few steps behind the big guns such as Qatar Airways, Emirates and Singapore Airlines, still riding on former glory days when they were the cream of the crop.

Flying to South America is ludicrously expensive, LATAM would be the best bet dollar wise but just be prepared for a hundred schedule change before you get onboard. Used them when I did the WC in Brazil. Did stop in Santiago each way but only for a quick couple of days.

No trips in the pipeline myself, just built a house so funds not available for such things at the moment! Did visit Qatar and Jakarta earlier in the year though on work ventures.

GI, I hear you re Qantas - the leprecorn ruined it ! and filled his pockets and board members grrrrr.
I've invested too many years with them since the heydays - lots of status/points thank christ they link with qatar when heading to the ME or EU.
I use Emirates a bit as well - got to say the 2 ME airlines are damn good ! I luv their lounges and service.
I've been advised many times to transfer my points/status to Singapore but I hate the routes to China.
Hence sticking by qantas alot - direct Shanghai, more direct to USA jump on with AA for internals.
IF I can cut out 1 2 stop overs I'll suffer Qantas for now.

Yeah Ive been twice in last 12 months to south amrica via chile. Expensive

First time I went business on points, second I paid for premium economy.. Eye watering.

At xmas you're basically paying 5k just for a economy ticket. Every latino in aus goes back.

You can also go via japan as friends from colombia have done

Was in Japan 2 months ago. So cheap for incredible food, and beers etc

Only expensive thing was accomodation.

Yeah we paid from $90 to $150 for most of it. $175 for our last night but we wanted to be near the bullet train station for an early start.

oh - better start a enviro thread Mono.
Here its burning fumes obviously but providing tourism $ to much needed economies - happy to sail as long as your yacht is fuckin massive :)

Qantas are fucked. Only loyal Australians that don't know better and haven't flown with other airlines rate them.

When I lived in Singapore 20 years ago not a single expat that we knew flew Qantas unless they had to. Once you fly with Emirates, Singapore, Qatar, Cathay Pacific, hell, even Malaysian airlines, you'll never fly Qantas unless you're stuck or they are convenient.

I won't fly with the pricks out of spite because of the way they rip off the domestic market. It's cheaper to fly from Cairns to Sydney than from the Mid North Coast to Sydney despite being 1/5 the route length. Why's that? No competition because...., no prizes for guessing, Qantas fuck every new entrant over and bankrupt them.

Cunts.

I couldn’t agree more, I avoid them like the plague.

It’s just old farts with 80 million frequent flyer points that insist on flying with them I find. About 50 other airlines I’d rather give my money to.
