I’m going to start by saying how much I love Australian football and the a league. Last year was imo one of the best years in terms of quality for the a league and was so pumped about this season.

I’ve watched all the game this weekend except the Wellington vs Perth game and I’m going to say the quality has been so poor.

I attended the game yesterday at commbank stadium, I’ve been going to the wanderers games since season 1, last year I only missed one home game. Yesterday’s game was the worst quality performance I think I’ve seen for quite some time. A lot of it had to do with City playing the worst type of football ever. Proper anti football.

I think we’ve discovered that it’s not great to let all your quality young players and fantastic older experienced players leaving in one season and expect the quality to stay the same.

I just feel like there is no real passion or energy in the competition this year. I know it’s only one week in but the quality drop off from last season is significant.

We should be enticing our players to stay a little longer imo.

I felt compelled to write this post. My kids wanted to leave the game after the 50th minute and I was actually bored a lot earlier than that. First time in a long time I found myself excited to leave.

I'm an a league super fan and I can't argue with that. I think players moving from club to club is a huge problem like we're supposed to have a huge derby with victory but our players switch so often it ruins it a bit for me.

I think it's the first Rd which is always a dud and the actual football should improve in the next few weeks. So hopefully you guys don't lose interest

The first few games or so of every season are a settling in period.

Some years teams have prepared better in preseason and get off to a flying start but most teams have a lot of inaccuracy and a lack of cohesion.

After about 5 games the table starts to reflect the real quality of teams.

We have seen a lot of good individual skills this weekend but also a lot of broken plays, misdirected passes and poor turnovers.

Guaranteed the level will improve quickly now the teams are all facing true competition.

We are always faced by the challenge of losing last seasons best to higher placed leagues and more money. Keeping the bets payers here makes for more entertainment and quality, but at the same time it limits both the salaries and career challenges those good players have and in the end would limit the level they can achieve.

We do have to accept that we are not one of the top leagues and perhaps adjust our interest to include the progression of our former players on the bigger stages.

Quality of team play is sure to improve over the next couple of weeks anyway.

A 3-3 draw between Mariners and Jets today will almost see a complete reversal of the table positions from the end of last season. For those of us among last year's lower teams, the start of this season looks much better than we have been used to - but we all know it is just the start and the real fight begins as teams get their act together.

Too early to be considering the league will be poor this season in my eyes.

Yeah the recycling has hurt some passion no doubt. And the rough starts is yet another reason why we should kick off earlier in late August, gives us a good 5 weeks to gel properly on the pitch while other finals are on. And we can head into Asia with some touch.

And the a-league Facebook page keeps posting about how much money the clubs are raising through transfers as if we are all shareholders.

The last few years has been good but with the amount of turnover there has to come a point where the product becomes poor.

Having said that - hopefully Brisbane and Perth are more competitive this year so the league will be more balanced. Also glad to see the back of Western United. The second division has shown there’s about 10 existing clubs around Australia that would’ve been a better choice than them. Imagine if we had South Melbourne and Wollongong instead of WU and the Bulls.

It's round one. Despite pre season teams are still getting into full competitive mode. Once we get injuries and suspensions going things start opening up and the story lines are created.

Football matches tend to open up after an hour.

Plenty of games across the world where the play just isn't clicking on the day. That's the nature or risk of the sport. You may not always get a cohesive performance.

There's a lot to watch off the ball too if you're sat at the right angles.

TV ratings are none existence, crowds are down and still no media coverage pretty piss poor start to the new season. Will this be the season that killed the ALM?

Yeah I think that's down to the minimal distributions. The clubs need big income from somewhere. Until the new broadcast deal comes through, and hopefully a good one, can the clubs maybe hold on to better players a little longer before overseas calls. Also hopefully leading to more respect with our transfer fees.

My algorithm has gotten way fewer posts this round. Had to manually search. It'll pick up.

Been saying it for a few years now, the quality of the Aleague has rapidly declined over the past 5-7 years.

This is why we see much more Cupsets lately, Aleague level declining.

Multiple factors for this though, such as decreased salary cap etc.

It's all well and good blooding youngsters, but they gotta earn it, and be good enough. At the moment it just seems we are putting so many youngsters in because its the cheap way out.

I didn't watch every minute of every game this week, but from the action I saw, it was poor.

Attended the Glory game, whilst the game was enjoyable, the level was really poor from both sides.

To be honest, i havent seen that. I recommend watching round 1 last year and this year when your emotions arent involved. I think r1 this year has been higher quality. A few years ago were better mind you (just after covid)

weren't TV ratings and fan engagement the highest it's been in many years last season?
Last year it was good, and the Aus Cup final this year got over 500k. But were as the ALM games didnt rate for game 1 of the season which is a first.
