Lets get the facts right my fellow mates :)

No, English Premier League (EPL) clubs are not franchises; they are corporations or private companies owned by shareholders, and they operate within a promotion and relegation system. In contrast to a franchise system, where clubs are typically permanently locked into a league, EPL teams can be promoted or relegated to the lower EFL Championship based on their performance each season.

Are typically privately owned and guaranteed a spot in the league, with no risk of relegation.

  • Key differences:
    • Franchises (e.g., in North American and APL hybrid):
    • Are typically privately owned and guaranteed a spot in the league, with no risk of relegation
  • Premier League Clubs:
Are corporations whose member clubs are shareholders in the Premier League itself. They are subject to relegation to a lower league, making them more like traditional sports clubs operating in a competitive league structure.
What makes them different from a franchise:
  • Promotion and Relegation:
The core principle of the English football league system, which the Premier League is part of, is that teams can be demoted to a lower division (the Championship) or promoted from it. Franchises do not have this risk.

  • Ownership Structure:
While many EPL clubs are owned by American investors, they are not "franchises" in the traditional sense. Instead, these are typically private sales of existing football clubs, with owners purchasing shares or controlling stakes in the companies that operate the clubs.

  • History and Tradition:
Football clubs have historical roots as community associations or clubs. The Premier League was formed by the clubs themselves to have more control over their finances and the overall league.
Is the Premier League a private organization?

The Premier League is a private company limited by shares. Its shareholders are the 20 Member Clubs at any given time, and The FA, which holds a special share.

  • The Premier League (EPL) and the lower divisions of English football are governed by The Football Association (The FA), England's national governing body for football, which oversees the entire football pyramid including the English Football League (EFL) and the National League System. While the Premier League is a private company run by its 20 member clubs, it operates under the sanctioning and regulatory oversight of The FA.
Fuckin AI, are you serious ?

It seems I hit a nerve with Liverpool 🤣

Yer means Jack plastic poop to me - rip offs as mentioned - pub first then turn up for Roo games no matter where played.

Interestingly, people do actually speak about epl teams here the way many speak of a league teams here

"Plastic", "corporation a vs corporation b" and "why care about whether my team wins when it is just a bunch of random 11 players from the 4 corners of the globe with no connection to the local area who happen to have some rich geezer pay them zillions of dollars to all put on the same shirt and pretend to play for my city"

Saw a passionate, drunk man on a train tell some people complaining about the globalization of the game, that the solution was to join him in supporting basingstoke fc in the 11th (?) division - where there is real football at a real club because every player and fan know each other

Local codes like afl, nrl and gaelic football seem better

Makes it tough for us to compete since the lack of globalization does make them more authentic.

We should really do a bottom up strategy rather than top down. Get 6 million aussies playing football regularly that a sufficient number are hooked and forced to complain about watching a bunch of randoms play for their team while a drunk person preaches the benefits of supporting a club in the 5th division of victoria

That’s the difference between a ‘fan’ and a ‘supporter’.

Yes and we all see it differently through our hearts and eyes…..and when you came to be.

I get globalisation is today and you either grasp it or you don’t.
As do pro sportsmen and women.
Some or most started with the passion and in time some become money merchants when they have made a good paying level some still have the same passion and belief whatever club or other sport means to them.
Locally I have been a active player registered player and luv ground up roots football to NPL and LFC I have followed since the 70’s and to me the club is still LFC despite different owners - I hardly even read or care about Fenway all I see is Red LFC and the many players I have watched admired passionately playing for the shirt and making sure they avoid relegation all my years and the many wonderful seasons.
It sure isn’t the same nothing ever stays the same you move forward with the times.
Believe me I sure prefer the old style game, skill, hard tackling, play the whistle, you go down you don’t dare roll around you acting Whimp never show weakness :)
Though I still luv the game and the ones who don’t like the modern top flight either arnt behind a good strong club or as mentioned are casual fans.
Klopps football been a joy to watch of the modern times what’s all the negative about haha Slots game is more controlled but we had wonderfully skilled players last seasons and got some rippa new ones that sure isn’t boring to me to date.

I always had serious doubts about whoever these people are. When publicly available information is so scarce and there "website" tells you very little about them I can see why perhaps the APL/FA was leery about these people. Plus if Western United is in as much debt as they supposedly seems to be and no one wants to assume them including any incoming "buyers" then this whole thing really isn't going anywhere. I have to say though actually paying the wages "early" for once so that no breach of contract clauses can be invoked by players and staff is a real dick move. They're still in limbo and can't go anywhere or do anything.

You'd have to assume that not having a licence would also allow players to leave their contracts. I can't imagine WU being successful in this current appeal given they now don't have a buyer.
