The Western United Thread

They can still sign players for VPL but if they dont pay their fines then they get completely halted just like what's happened this week after their 1st friendly on sunday.
That is odd though isn't it? If FIFA has a transfer ban, wouldn't it apply to ALL transfers?

The only way it could work is if the NPL "club" is NOT the same legal entity as the Aleague licensee? Which if thats the case, would go against the original FFA licensing agreement for clubs to have junior setups in order to participate in the Aleague wouldn't it?

why are people still bothering with this failed franchise?

People have been trying to convince themselves for 7 years that this would be the magical franchise that builds its own stadium and becomes the geographic juggernaught that proves the A league model is the only way. A lot was riding on WU putting those bitter old schoolers to bed.

The ONLY Football club in Australasia to own their own football specific stadium was, I believe, how it was flaunted out there in new dawn world.

I'm starting to believe football in this country is just one whole soap opera show and western are like the character they bring in to boost ratings which ironically loses rating for the actual a league but I'm sure people talking about western is up and Googleinhnwtf is western united

100% what else would you think a quasi professional league which self identifies as an entertainment product would be?

It's the Western United Stadium Paradox.
The only football club in Australia to own their own football stadium also once enquired about using the Knights privately owned football stadium.

Well they did win an Aleague license off the fact one their competing bids had an existing stadium that was absolutely unsuitbale for Aleague use after which they promptly announced they would be playing out of for 7 home matches 2 years later.

Lucky they moved out of their initial council built NPL ground in Caroline Springs to a smaller one built by the council in Tarneit , that was 3D chess right there....

I think Joeys nugget of information around there's nothing stopping a 3rd Melbourne team entering if someone has the fee for the licence, is an interesting one.

Theres a few little murmurings around that there's interest in the licence and a rental agreement of Ironbark fields for training and admin headquarters, but not the overall stadium deal.

but not the overall stadium deal.
The "stadium" deal always was and always be a load of shit. It was their fraudulent entry ticket into the league and the carrot that it still being dangled to the suckers who believe that this was a good idea in it's current form. Full size stadiums are minimum 250-300 million dollars in this country and no level of government in their right mind would fund a stadium for a now failed tax dodging franchise administrative basket case. Maybe the local council one day might take pity on them and give them a couple of thousand extra seats on their stadium ( their being the local council's that is, important to establish ownership clarity here ) if the economics are there and they're not surrounded by cows as far as the eye can see.

" Sydney Olympic chairman Damon Hanlin - Hanlin has accused the league of a "commercial grab" - the move ensured that the club's A-League Men and A-League Women seasons have continued uninterrupted. "

Well duh Damon, losing Western Paddock was bad enough however losing the Gosford Palm Trees would have been a hammer blow for the league so the APL had to step in.

""ot yet, no," Rosich said when asked if the January transfer window's opening represented a deadline for a Canberra men's team. "Engagement continues with Capital Football and Canberra. Clearly, great support -- government support, great corporate support -- and a really dedicated football community. "

So no Canberra team but he's not 'ruling it out'. I also won't rule out the prospect of dating Scarlett Jo but it's just not going to happen for a long while now is it? Geez, stupid headlines.

"Rosich likewise wouldn't rule out the return of hibernating Western United to the A-League for next season. The club's previously listed transfer ban was removed from the FIFA database this week, after what ESPN understands was a near $1m AUD claim to former striker Aleksander Prijovic was paid. "

LOL

"[Western United] are working incredibly hard, and the focus has been on governance and financial matters," said Rosich. "And those financial considerations will keep getting worked through, and they'll move quickly to operational matters so that there can be consideration for next season. "

Who else do you owe money to? Pay your bills you deadbeats.

Learning that a "Victoria Patriots" Geelong bid became Western United, I've gone on a bit of a search tonight reading into their origin story. Thought I'd paste some links here for anyone else interested in the scam... I mean the bid.

Geelong A-League hopefuls 'will be new Wanderers', says Horvat

Victoria Patriots: Our A-League bid reveals plans for soccer stadium

A-League expansion bid: Simonds Stadium to host A-League football in Geelong if licence granted

Western Melbourne Group secures an A-League licence

Funding behind WMG still a mystery

Some of the gold quotes:
Horvat contends that the club will be well financed, insisting "it's the least" of their problems.
the reality is that there was always going to be a Geelong bid and that's what has happened
We are probably looking at somewhere around a 15,000-20,000 seater
The bid has promised construction will begin within days of securing a licence. Now they get their chance to stick to their word.
“I’m told what got them over the line over (rival Melbourne bid) Team 11 I guess, which was the other major competitior out of Victoria, was the fact that they just had better funding behind them and some very strong football people behind them,” “Powerful people like Lou Sticca who have had a major influence in the game and that carried a lot of weight in the end.
"We did an exceptional amount of due diligence to make sure we were very confident that the invested money behind the group was good, solid, Australian money invested in the A-League concept.
"We've made it very clear from day one that we want this region of western Victoria to have a purpose-built, boutique football stadium," Horvat told Goal. Horvat's group are working with architecture firm Populous to develop "two to three" models of what Geelong's football stadium could look like.
Horvat has claimed a new stadium built for a Geelong-based A-League club would provide "immense" economic benefit to Victoria's western region.
Gallop said that the interim facilities at Casey Fields weren’t “ideal” in the short-term. “They (the Victorian government) were open to the conversation, but it wouldn’t have solved the problem in the interim, we would have found ourselves in a less than ideal facility in the short term,” 😂

I wonder why they moved away from Geelong??? It surely would've found more than the 3,000 they get at Tarneit.
