The Orange Army. (Brisbane Roar Official Thread)

I think Brisbane are missing three signings to become a good team this season
Which positions are you thinking of?

I'm leaning towards a couple of right fullbacks as our greatest absence at the moment, and some backups for our central and attacking midfield. We have a decent keeper or two, plenty of centrebacks and other defenders, Klein and O'Shea for our midfield, and a few decent forwards now.

I reckon a winger and a stronger cb. I think mcgarry and Klein will be key players and hopefully the marquees work for you

As is so often the case - when your first choice players get injured or leave and you don't have depth you find yourself in a whole lot of hurt.

We have a good first team, and some strong bench players, but I don't see us having a good backup for all positions yet.

I see us having a 5 2 3 sort of formation with our fullbacks sharing the wing with the two outside forwards in a 5 2 2 1 mix - but also with our forwards dropping back into midfield to help create variation and control through the middle. Ruhs and Hore both do that a lot. I am not good on structures other than recognising two banks of 4 in defence but that is how I interpret our formation in the pre-season games I have been able to watch.

If we play 2 at the back we have an extra in midfield that hopefully Vrakas will prove a good signing for.

As long as we have backup fullbacks for both sides we can continue playing that way. Burke-Gilroy gets played on both sides but I like him better on the left. That makes us good on the left but very light on the right. I suspect Valkanis will be playing Burke-Gilroy on the right unless we pick up another good option there.

Our defensive centre should be strong until we lose Herrington in January. By then we have to work out who our best 3 are out of Warland, Ferkranus, Bility, Ludwik and Valkanis. Nobody really stands out above the rest so I take your comment about a stronger cb even with the rest. Have to watch those positions develop into the season before we can see how solid we are.

Roar Media Release:
"Brisbane Roar can today announce the signing of Youstin Salas on a season long loan for the highly anticipated Isuzu UTE 25/26 A-League season.

The 29-year-old arrives in Brisbane from Sporting San Jose FC, where he was on loan from parent club Deportivo Saprissa since January 2025.

Prior to this, Salas notably participated in the 2022 World Cup Qatar, where he helped Costa Rica with a narrow 1-0 victory against Japan, along with a hard-fought defeat to Germany in the closing group stage match.

Domestically, Youstin won the 2018/19 Concacaf League with CS Herediano, along with 4 Costa Rica League titles with Deportivo Saprissa and Herediano.

The Costa Rican international also previously had a spell at Wellington Pheonix, making 12 appearances for the New Zealand side.

Salas joins the Roar, alongside a growing defensive force which also includes the likes of Lucas Herrington, Hosine Bility, Dimitri Valkanis, James McGarry, Austin Ludwik, Ben Warland and Antonee Burke-Gilroy

“I’m extremely happy to be joining Brisbane Roar”, Youstin says.

“The football club is building in an exciting direction, and I can’t wait to play in Brisbane colours and give my all for the fans this season.”

“I'm excited to welcome Youstin to Brisbane Roar”, Head Coach Michael Valkanis said.

“I believe his experience from playing in South America and the A-League will help the squad greatly.

“His defensive capabilities paired with his ability to get up and down the field will make him a crucial member of the team this season." "

Youstin Salas is a defensive midfielder.

Edit:
Generally speaking we now have
- Freke and Bouzanis in goals.
- Herrington, Warland, Ferkranus, Bility, Ludwik and Valkanis as centre backs.
- Burke-Gilroy and McGarry as fullbacks.
- Milorad Stajic and Youstin Salas for defensive mid specifically.
- O'Shea, Klein, Durrington and Georgios Vrakas as Central/Attacking mids although Vrakas is reported to play winger too.
- Halloran and Brazete as specific wider forwards.
- Hore, Amanatidis and MacNicol more as attacking mids and general forwards.
- Ruhs, Vidic, Long and maybe Ozzi as strikers.

Roar Media Release:
"Brisbane Roar are delighted to announce the return of fan favourite forward Sharn Freier on loan from Bundesliga giant VfL Wolfsburg for the Ninja A-League 25/26 season.

A local Brisbane City product, Freier made her Brisbane Roar debut in the 20/21 season where she made 9 appearances and scored her first professional goal in a 6-0 win over Melbourne Victory.

Freier had a breakout 23/24 campaign at left wing, starting all 22 games and netting 2 goals and contributing 5 assists.

It was a stellar season in orange that led to her first call-up for the CommBank Matildas. Since then, Freier has been flying in the green and gold, playing at the Paris 2024 Olympics and scoring 2 international goals in friendlies against Chinese Taipei.

Freier took out 4 awards at the club’s 23/24 Season Awards Night, including Player of the Year (Kate McShea Medal), Young Player of the Year, Player’s Player and Fans’ Player of the Year after a 2023/24 season to remember.

Before the 24-year-old’s move to Germany, Freier made 11 appearances in the 24/25 season, scoring twice and bagging four assists before an ankle injury saw her sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Speaking on her return, Sharn said, “I'm really happy to be back and pulling on the Brisbane Roar shirt again.

"Representing a club and fanbase who have always been there for me means so much and I can't wait get back to playing for them this season."

“We’re beyond thrilled to have Sharn back, she’s a massive addition to our squad,” Head Coach, Alex Smith said.

“Her ability to take players on and create is exciting and resonates with our fanbase. She is the perfect fit for our playing style, and I can't wait to work with her again.” "

"Brisbane Roar can today announce the signing of midfielder, Jordan Lauton on a two-year deal.

The 22-year-old arrives in Brisbane from Western United where he spent a number of years at the club graduating through the ranks and into the first team squad.

The 24/25 season proved to be a breakout season for the midfielder who became a prominent member of John Aloisi’s squad across his 18 appearances for the side, which included a contender for the Isuzu UTE A-League Men Goal of the Season.

Speaking on joining the Roar, Jordan said: “I’m thankful for the opportunity to have signed for the club.

“I feel very fortuitous to play with my new teammates and will be aiming to help the team bring exciting football to the fans this season.”

First team coach Michael Valkanis says, “I am both glad and excited to welcome Jordan to Brisbane Roar”.

“He is both a dynamic and dependable player who will offer more competition for the central midfield position, which will only be of benefit to the squad throughout the season.” "

Roar Media Release:
"Brisbane Roar are happy to officially announce the permanent signing of Matthew Dench for the upcoming Isuzu UTE A-League men 25/26 season.

The 21-year-old moves up north to Brisbane from NPL Victoria side Oakleigh Cannons, where he made 26 appearances, serving as a crucial figure in their campaign, finishing fourth.

Dench also spent 2 years abroad in Europe, making appearances for Charlton Athletics' u21 side as well as their first team, debuting in a 3-0 win against Gillingham FC back in 2022.

At an international level, he represented the u20 Australian National team in late 2022 in matches against the likes of Morrocco, Chile and England.

Speaking on signing with the club, Dench said, "I'm proud to have signed for the Roar for the 25/26 season. It's exciting to join the club during what is a new era here.

"I've worked extremely hard to get myself here and it's because of this that I'm driven to give my all for the shirt and make the fans proud this season."

Head Coach Michael Valkanis said, "Matthew has been fantastic throughout his trial period with the club and it's because of this that we are happy to have him on board this season.

"He is an athletic, left-footed player who has to ability to pick a good pass and be impactful at both ends of the field.

"I look forward to watching him progress throughout the season."

Matthew Dench is a left back - gives us McGarry, Burke-Gilroy and now Dench for left back.

Right back needs more attention still.

A really challenging game against the Qld State side tonight saw us pinch a 2-0 win.

You can watch the replay on youtube here:

Surprising line-up from Valkanis, with very little of the normal starting 11 - and a lot of the newest faces instead.

The play was unsurprisingly disjointed with the appearance of some of our first pre-season games when no-one had really played competitive football with each other. That said, we took most control for the first 20 minutes before the State side got their act together - which makes sense with them coming from all over to make the squad too.

The early game time was where the individual skills of the Roar players outweighed the individual skills of their opponents until the State side settled in to each others' games.

The last 10-15 minutes of the game really belonged to the State side despite us picking up our second goal in that period. It was much like a youth team against seniors in that last quarter hour - Roar positioned themselves to get the ball but without the commitment or strength needed and the State players bulling their way through. It meant the State side had some strong and dangerous runs through 2 and 3 Roar players which is something Valkanis will have noted for 'real' games.

We looked quite tired as the game wore on and we wore out - again likely a symptom of players new to the starting line-up and team and lacking match fitness.

Long often ran offside expecting a quicker ball through - his frustration was obvious and increasing as the game went on.

Bility and Valkanis were our two centrebacks (so much for my 3 at the back thoughts), with McGarry and Salas as the two fullbacks and Stakic playing a deep defensive midfield and often dropping between the two centrebacks when we brought the ball out. Both CBs played well without seeming to outright dominate the space.

Salas showed the confusion for players just coming together - getting caught up running into the same space as others or anticipating actions that did not follow. That aside, he was very useful and will settle into the team quickly.

Vrakas played well but showed a bit of frustration at times. He will have to keep that under control or it will cost him (and us) unnecessary cards. He actually got carded when he ignored the ref and refused to walk off the far side of the pitch when he was subbed. Mindless stupidity that Valkanis will obviously not let pass unmentioned.

Have to wonder how long Lauton will keep his heavy head of hair in the Qld summer. I can only imagine how hot it would make his head. He played a good game too with some strength in challenges and winning balls with his commitment and pace.

Vidic is a large unit who seems to lumber around a bit but I would say that is deceptive. He likes the ball to him or over his head to run onto - often putting himself goalside of his defender to use his body to give him free run on any ball coming over the top.

Finally found out who the mysterious number 33 has been for us in pre-season games: Noah Maieroni - our Young Roar captain and a left winger who seems to play as a defensive mid to central mid more than a clean winger in the games I have seen.

The State side made sure that many Roar players took home some commemorative marks - as I expect from NPL players against the fancy pants league players. The ref took too long to start carding them though - seeming to believe there is such a thing as a friendly match. Late in the match the contact became a bit more agricultural and a few cards did follow. We were not exactly saints either by that time.

Definitely a step backwards in our performance tonight with the number of new and lesser used faces in the side - but that is exactly what pre-season is for and it does nothing to detract from our form when players are familiar with each other. Plenty of good play on show and they will settle in to the team well.

A shout out to the State side - they stuck it to us - and it was not their best side either with some players unavailable who would have made the run on side.

Looking forward to the game at AJ Kelly Park on Tuesday night.

From a few social media posts, Brisbane Roar men having on field fights in trial games.
Does the spirit of Zadhovich live on?
I hope Valkanis hasn't instilled too much combative competitiveness into their mindset to the extent that it surfaces as a lack of control and aggression.

It is an invitation for opposition to niggle and get a game changing reaction aside from the detrimental effect of blame and fault finding within a team.
