The Orange Army. (Brisbane Roar Official Thread)

Valkanis aside:
"With Suncorp Stadium set to host three more concerts in the next few weeks before the surface is being completely replaced, the Roar’s next four games are away from home, starting with next Sunday’s clash against Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium."

Last time I recall them doing this the pitch was loose turf under foot for weeks. Slabs of turf moved when players tried to push off hard.

On Valkanis:
I have not bought in to every game being a physical battle, or "playing a simplistic style of football" outright.

To play with commitment and determination, and to play good 'simplistic' passing football, I am totally happy.

To play simplistic in terms of get a goal then boot it long and hack your opponents I don't agree with.

So far I am seeing the determination and commitment part in spades, but I am not seeing much beyond good tough physical play. Other people's comments suggest we are playing like it is a warzone and we encourage physicality that crosses the line. Maybe that is just my orange glasses - I don't see us playing like hacks and butchers...?

The thing that bothers me is the increasing time wasted and booted long ball aspect over the positive possession/control football that we have also played up to now. I am worried that we might lose sight of football if we focus too much on the battle.

To apply an old adage once again - when you are up to your armpits in mud and crocs it is hard to remember that you are there to drain the swamp.

I like the Roar, but I think the attitude of your coach is not going to help your season, could even derail it. Referees and players will get sick of that pretty quick

On the time wasting - I really hope so.

It would stop the moment the officials controlled it and the sooner the better.

Surely you see it now. So many late tackles already

To be honest I have always tended to miss Roar players doing bad things when others say they see them all the time.

Players like Jade North and Matt Smith that to me always looked like good hard tacklers but others called thugs and dirty.

It is my focus on the Roar aspect of every interaction I guess - that's what my attention is on - so I don't miss a single late hit, shirt tug, trip or hack from an opponent but maybe I miss stuff the other way.

I wonder how much that applies to all fans of all clubs - you see what happens to your players to impede them much more clearly because that is your primary focus.

I see our players rushing in and putting body on body in challenges (not late ones) and I find it too much force. It is a bit reminiscent of Wanderers early on in the league when they used to get the ball by running through their opponent. I don't agree with that (then or now) and it should be pulled up and penalised.

At the same time I saw Kitto throwing himself down "in pain" off some very light incidental contact (at least once a "late hit") and it was only his action that made it a foul. Once at least he wasn't targeted at all but managed to milk late contact off someone running past and went down like the Suncorp sniper had got him. He wasn't alone in that behaviour of course as all teams do it to varying degrees - but surely you can't deny it has been a feature of Adelaide's play for some time with Mauk and co. The dark arts of professional football that I detest so much.

I watched Adelaide players doing all the bits of niggle and thump in this game and I wonder if you see all those too or are as focussed on your own team getting fouled as I am?

I will say what I have said before on this theme - I will try to focus a bit more on both sides and judge for myself what I see when I am looking for it. Can't promise my orange glasses won't slant it still but I will at least give it an honest go.

I don't want us playing dirty. I am happy with us playing hard.

Madre de Dios..... I just saw that last minute winner. Noice.

I've noticed MacNicol getting some minutes. How have his performances been? I really liked what I've seen for Australia but seniors are another world.

physically he looks good enough this year, I guess valkanis must be doing a lot of gym work

technically he has always looked impressive

Valkanis has said before that he likes MacNicol because he has a bit of swagger and a bit of cheekiness along with his skills.

I think he has largely been swallowed up in his appearances this season.

Valkanis is not playing positive, combination football coming forward and that is the sort of game style that suits MacNicol - balls going in various directions to unsettle opponents, force movement and decisions, and create opportunities.

Expecting MacNicol to make a difference when we are playing hoofball and having 9 players flat footed time and again is not a game he can shine in. Equally, expecting him to boss his opponent physically to then create something is not his style.

Brazete would actually be more effective at making something of nothing - having proven that he can take on one or two direct opponents and get a shot or pass away.

MacNicol is a bit like Henry Hore in my eyes - slight of build, using pace and deception rather than bringing the ball through under his body with strength, and looking to combine with others to bring the ball forward together.

Our positive, pre-season game style would suit MacNicol and give us a chance to judge him at senior level - but we seem to be playing less and less of that style of football as the season moves along rather than improving on it.

My best positive spin is to think that the hot Summer leaves us exposed in the last 30+ minutes if we play like that so Valkanis has us push for the first 20 minutes then settle into counter attacking play most of the rest of the game.

I mean, all of those complaints have been valid. That we are doing well this season is nice and refreshing to see, but you can't be shit for 10 years and then all of a sudden pretend that time didn't exist.

Hore has been a bit underwhelming this season. Hoping to see him lift a bit as he is key for us.

I am confused by the point you are making.

We could be shit for 10 years then suddenly have a brilliant season. How would applauding the new season in any way be pretending time didn't exist? To me, it is obvious that the previous 10 years of shit are the reason for positive thought when we do well - not denial of it.

I may have missed a comment or inference that you are responding to.

I agree - but again I look at the style of play and wonder why we refuse to play positive football when we have players who can do it.

When Hore came onto the field after his injury he lifted us and we played really nice football. You could feel the difference in the game the instant he got on.

Since then he has had a couple of starts and a few bit parts when he has seemed pretty isolated.

You don't take a fine tool like Hore and start knocking walls down with him.

Having him receive the ball at his feet with a few players moving and offering choices around him is his strength. He can beat his opponent, pick a pass, and open up the front third.

Giving him the ball while closely marked and offering nothing in support other than a solo run or a back pass is a sure way to limit his impact.

I rate Hore highly as a team based impact player. I want us to play to that strength again.

Those criticisms were fair and valid. To use them in this manner is almost as if to say that those criticisms were wrong. You know, the whole, "haters gonna hate, just ignore them" or "we'll shut them up".

You can't be turning on your fans. you need them on your side. Sure, we are doing well this season which is good to see, but it seems like in applauding the current season, they are having a go at everyone who was rightly critical in the past few. Not that they are denying it, but rather shoving it in the faces and being like, "what you gonna say now??". No need for that.

Someone I know remarked that BR are playing a very physical brand of football and has caught everyone by surprise. However, now that they have seen the game plan, they are beginning to adjust and Valkanis Senior has been unable to counter it on the game day. With the hotter weather, we could see BR tire by half time. BR definitely needs some new players but if all that Valkanis can offer is hoofball, physical football and screaming from the sidelines, he could well fail.

Ah. I took the negative comments to be all the things people have been saying earlier this season rather than comments relating to previous seasons.

So to me they were saying we are boring and physical early in the season and yet we were sitting second.

I see where your comment came from.

Yeah you’re totally right. Remains to be seen if we start playing more positive football in the coming games.

Really think we are missing Stajic. It seems to be pulling an extra back into defence meaning we don’t have much centrally going forward.
