The Medical Room - Injury Updates

Keanu Baccus ruled out for the rest of this year and possibly a large chunk of next season after sustaining an Achilles injury in training with St. Mirren in mid-March, only a couple of days after making his return to play from his previous hamstring tendon injury sustained at the end of last year.

Baccus is the biggest loser of the Popovic era. Somewhat feel he's been found out but I also had high hopes for his play and growth. Some frustratingly casual and negligent Australia displays made me want O'Neill instead and now O'Neill is Mr complacent.

No player without a strong physical profile has survived poppa

(Not a criticism just an observation he seems to value physicality)

Herrington is excellent for his age but we need to see him against Mexico. It'd be unfair to call a kid less physical.

What's meant by that? Velupillay isn't built strongly but he's got a sort of balance and movement that makes him strong in play.

Who are the most physically weak that Popovic didn't choose again?

Scouted has hard data but i dont so i have to go off my eye

Tilio, baccus, nisbit, balard to a degree Are physically weak players who have struggled to get a loom, sega too

Herrington is physically excellent already. Fast, tall agile and aerially dominant

Vellupilay has a good physical profile too, very mobile, changes direction quickly especially for a reasonably tall player (181cm is tall for a winger, but height for a winger isnt that important)

Nisbet is vertically challenged - but physically very strong.

McGree went off on 75min after pulling up and grasping at his hamstring. He ran alongside and opponent then hopped and grabbed. He was down for a couple of minutes then stood up and walked down the tunnel.

Body language wasn't the best and you could see he wished he could continue but also wasn't able to according to the coach.

Hopefully Riley McGree's injury isn't that serious because we can't risk anyone else being ruled out of the World Cup especially this close to our campaign getting underway.

The lying down was for his own comfort and to slow the game for his team mates but the latter is a straw hat argument. He received minimal treatment and then stood up and walked in a circle but it had been decided he was going off.

The initial body language seemed to be more about the world cup fear then the current match. A big 'oh no' moment. Happened on the defensive with a jolt movement so it was seemingly inevitable.

If the local diagnosis is adamant its a 6 week thing then it's over but if it's a 3 week potential return then McGree should be over in camp and receive treatment with a decision up to the last.

A nervous wait across multiple time zones now. I reckon I'll be waking up to my feed loading the dreaded news.

McGree injuries often suffer radio silence too or we'll be given some Popovic clip saying 'I haven't spoken to him so we'll have to wait and see.'

Just no info coming through on McGree. Probably need a proper scan and a lot of dust to settle after a big day.

If he hadn't gone off, the national team socials would've posted the match result.

I'm not sure I can recall a hamstring injury that was that short. They're usually 4+ weeks. This is bad news!
Despite our depth, I'd take McGree if there were a chance of playing in the Paraguay game. We would hope to turn be into the next round.

I got so mad with his last injury that I felt like we should tell him he just won't be considered anymore. I know it sounds ridiculous but we almost shouldn't plan with him.

It would be unlikely that a hamstring tweak that requires you to go off would be something so minimal. Doesn't bode well.
