The Kick That United A Nation

I was at Big Bamboo in Shanghai and ended up celebrating with former doubles tennis World No.1 and tennis administrator Paul McNamee. The place was packed with Aussies going nuts.

I'll give it a watch tonight. A lot of emotional flashbacks coming now.

I just remember thinking 'we're there!'

Seeing our name at the draw was surreal and the Les Murray 'Australia have drawn Brazil.' In with the big boys.

I feel different about the iran match these days

Games with viduka and kewell playing together for the roos are far too scarce. At the time no one realized how few players of that calibre of player we would produce

I try to enjoy the players and forget the result. It also makes eventual qualification so much sweeter

To qualify through that insane oceania path where our players sometimes had 18 months between games took a really special team and an element of luck. Thanks for the memories!

a epic chapter in our game !
‘74 I was young but it was big and the next bigger thing bringing the nation together was Bonds Australia 11 winning the Americas Cup away from the Yanks for the very time many you young fellas wouldn’t have been around - it was like just as you felt about this epic period.
After all the years of being disrespected here and always on the back foot our game brought the country on its feet !
MW mentioned when did our conservative aussies ever boo another Nations !
Uruguay already had a bitter taste to us going back the karate chop to Baartz for many of us.
Rocoba was the pantemine villain we needed and damn didn’t he nearly get them that 2nd goal.
Seeing Dukes HK Bresch and all that group pre that game tenure broight tears to my eyes - they all sit above who have followed to this day for me !
To hang in losing just 1nil previous game at that cauldron was gladiator proportions.
The best thing Lowy did for football here was Guus.

I don't know if it is just ptsd from the two play offs, but I still rate Recoba as the scariest free kick / corner taker I have ever seen.

Adam Peacock's book about it is full of interesting anecdotes about the play off for those interested who haven't read it.

Can’t disagree CS.
He scared the crap out of you every time the ball got towards him for you knew he was going to beat our defense and create.
For sure his spot kicks and corners were lethal as !
Firm and the trajectories were always spot on for someone of there’s to meet.
Class player

In terms of reactions, I mainly remember the next day at school. First up we had English, and the English teacher (who always spoke so monotone and dry) asked us all if anyone kept reading through whatever book we were reading through at the time, and on of the boys just blurts out “Nah, I was watching the Socceroos. Did you watch sir?”

“No, I just missed the biggest game in the history of the country. Of course I watched it.”

🤣
