Tell us all what and where your favourite bakeries are (and I don't mean the idiots that own Brisbane Roar)....

They might be modern pastry houses to historic rural institutions or just the little Vietnamese fella down the road.

Maybe some of the wonderful ethnic baker’s around the place - French boulangeries with their baguettes and their croissants, Authentic Portuguese bakeries, known for pasteis de nata (custard tarts), Lebanese bakers are with their mastery of both savory flatbreads and intricate, syrup-soaked sweets or Greek bakeries with their spanikopita or baklava or bougatsa....

Let's celebrate the wonderful diversity of Australia through the medium of pastry!!!!

I'll kick off with a couple of my regular local haunts around the Brisbane bayside area whereI live....

There's La Bouche Patisserie in Cleveland with it's authentic selection of French pastries.

Pastel d Nata also in Cleveland which is as good as Portuguese bakery I've been to outside of Portugal. The custard tarts are next level!!

Vandough at Victoria Point which is an upmarket authentic Vietnamese/French patisserie with the best Banh mi around.

Banjo's Bakery in Cleveland which any Tasmanians might be familiar with great doughnuts, great doughnuts ..

And Kvitka Loukoumades which is at Thornlands which is more of little family owned dessert and coffee shop rather than bakery but still worth a mention for it's....yep amazing loujoumades!!

Banette Bayside at Wynumn which is another French boulangerie and does croissants to die for....

I do love a good bakery!!

I love pastries. Is Australian wheat bad for us? When I'm in Europe I can gorge on endless wheat products no worries. But Australian wheat products give me issues eventually, and it seems I'm not the only one who notices this.

Apparently our wheat is hardier because of our climate, but also makes it harder for us to digest. People who import their wheat don't have issues anymore.

Nikos and Vanillas in Melbourne were good

so was the hopetoun tea room

Big sigh of relief. I thought people would be uploading photos of their sourdoughs!

Good pie shop info is what we need.

Don't known where weet bix is made but when I visit Australia it acts as a bugger laxative than a Dare coffee. Body changes over the years too but you're probably into something.

General quality I suppose. Cheap mass produced European supermarket pastries are full of other stuff too compared to the proper baker.

When I was in Uni a had a housemate from Ulm. His biggest struggle was our bread: "It's not grey enough" lol. He wasn't wrong. Store bought white bread ain't much chop in compared to German bread I guess. Still love it though haha.

Australia exports wheat to Europe. Loads of pasta in Europe is made from Australian durum wheat.

Its not the wheat that's 'better'. A big part of it is the fact you're on holidays, relaxed, enjoying life and walking around a lot more and eating less.

Gluten is gluten though. If you're intolerant in Australia you'll be intolerant in Europe.

Lune at South Brisbane is a French croissanterie and is probably churning out the best in Brisbane....

Cafe Lisboa a Portuguese cafe, also at South Brisbane is morenofva cafe but does some pretty impressive bakery items....

A friend in hospitality swears its the water and yeast in Europe that makes bread and pasta taste "lighter".... I tedn toa gree with you, being on holiday and relaxed, everything tastes better...

Aparat from bread though EVERYTHING else, veggies, fruit, meat is 100000% better, especially when its regional, I think only our seafood and maybe dairy is comparable.

For lovers of the authentic French Baguette in Brisbane then the Christian Jacques Bakery at Kangaroo Point do baguettes that taste just like those in France. Or near enough!!

And Le Boulangerie Amour Fou in Queen Street in the city is pretty authentic with a couple of other outlets in Brisbane as well

Ask them if they make one of those. Delicious.

There's this very nice classic French restaurant in Brisbane called Montrachet.

They used to have an old fashioned desert trolley with all sorts of choux pastry items and I've had their Paris-Brest.

But last time I went they had stopped the desert trolley just the doing a-la-carte deserts....

I was just in Brissie but didn't get the chance to visit. Will try another time I hope!

Sour dough is an over rated bread.
were you in Cairns long enough to remember Mozart and Beethoven?

Those cakes were brilliant. Apparently they made so much money they just retired

There is still a Vietnamese baker that is ok

I don't remember them! There are some okay bakeries but no standouts. The Bahn Mi guy at Rusty's is very popular.

I like a good crispy crust baguette in the mornings. Salty butter and a nice fine cut English marmalade like Frank Cooper’s which my local IGA does or an apricot jam like Bonne Mamam.

Or in the cooler months a nice dark jam, say like St Dalfour black cherry....

These jams are a little bit pricey but I don't care. You only live once!!

I don't eat much during the day but a good rustic rye sourdough in the evening with dinner. Bit of salty butter....yum!
