The Australian Championship 🇦🇺🏆

3 years ago, Rangers took over 100,000 to Seville for a mid-week cup final, the biggest ever travelling support outside of its own country in European football history, it can be done!
You won’t get any arguments from me about how good rangers support is..unfortunately I still have to work

You would be lucky to get a single Italian person in Melbourne rocking up to this or even caring that its on. Could you imagine what an occasion it would be if we were playing one of the croatian interstate clubs.
Boycott or not, if it was Sydney Croatia there would be people hanging from the rafters at OV for this. From both sides...

I have a couple of friends and relatives who are considering going for what it’s worth. Whether they do or not is another thing

No doubt they have better/one of the best travelling support outside of maybe Hellas and Preston
Thats why, low key, I still think it would have been better to hold this thing up in Sydney... even if it meant absolutely no chance for me to attend.

South would have brought 500-1000 easy for a big final like this....

Have always said that Marconi has never travelled particularly well, even when crowds were at their peak in the 90s. You can look at the nsl grand final between Melbourne knights and Marconi at Olympic park in the 96’ as an indicator. That season Marconi had the 4th highest average attendance in the league at 5,000+ and even then there was only a bus load or so who went down. As I say, in this country there’s no other club which as a club culture more heavily tied to the physical club itself as a gathering place/community hub than Marconi. Other clubs like Hellas have a strong culture of travelling which I have a great respect for. Every club is different

Yea that was my thinking, would have been a better mix, but the overall crowd will probably be better in Melbourne. We know by and large Melbourne Italians won’t turn out, have discussed ad nauseam how Sydney Italians and Melbourne Italians are different re soccer for various cultural and historical reasons.

Also the Croatians are relatively unique in their willingness to come out to support clubs other than their own, as I’ve said before in that the various Croatian clubs around the country have these “sister club” relationships, again for cultural and historic reasons

You dont get much in between with the Italians in Melbourne, its either follow Italy obsessively when the WC and Euros come around (assuming they qualify) or its AFL
And/or Melbourne victory. As I’ve said and not to go over to again, the traditional Italian clubs in Melbourne (Brunswick juventus more specifically) were destroyed by the merger/de merger situation.

And on top of that the cultural importance of the afl in Melbourne and it being tied to assimilation/acceptance was a factor/“evolutionary pressure” which simply didn’t/doesn’t exist to the same degree in Sydney

Revising my crowd prediction down to 2500-3000 for the final. What an absolute shit day it looks like it will be. We can also forget the long throw by the looks it.

Why’s exactly does it rule the long throw out?

Dare say with the weather predicted, the ground it’s being played at and the tactics both clubs are likely to employ it’s going to closely resemble a uk lower leagues game

Or when F1 is on then some ol Val’s do some laps at Lygon and they have no clue who drives for Ferrari hahaha
