The Australian Championship 🇦🇺🏆

Interesting to see some of the original 8 foundation clubs doing so poorly (namely Sydney United and Olympic), one would have expected they would have gone all in on this comp.

Canberra definately the biggest surprise packet, great to see.

Only 2 weeks in and I think it demonstrates a 2nd division with a full home and away season is more than possible provided clubs are okay financially. Even an 8 team to start of with would be fine.

The 8 teams I'd start of with assuming all teams would want to be a part of the league full time would be - Souths, Preston, Marconi, Wolves, South Hobart, APIA, Sydney United and Canberra/new club from Perth.

Only dissappointments attendance wise thus far, Sydney United, Hiedelberg and Olympic.

Its still early days, but agree, so far so good... Some teething issue with broadcast and heavy handed policing and of course some clubs performance but overall I agree, the concept seems sound... I would be willing to assume that clubs sitting on the fence about applying for this and who didnt make it for this first iteration, may very well be more willing to apply for next years.

Really want Avondale to go away, once the cash supply is gone, the club will be non existant, ideally replace them with Knights.

Also think its a great opportunity for a team from the Gold Coast.

Don't really see any teams from Brisbane or Adelaide really making a push at the moment.

Yeah Im not Avondale's #1 supporter either tbf. Its smells of their owners little pet project and there is a reason they are universally disliked in Melbourne by other clubs. Even most of the Italian clubs want nothing to do with them...

As for Brisbane clubs I dont really know what the lay of the land is there these days.

I have a few football contacts in Adelaide and whilst the junior scene is quite strong and the Old traditional clubs are still ticking over some of smaller clubs seem to also have a good set-up as far as juniors and facilities is concerned. What is dissimilar to Melbourne, from an ex-NSL perspective, is that their old supporters seem to have well and truly embraced Adelaide United as the cities representative on the national stage... I know that both West Adelaide and Juve have made noises about joining in the past.... I reckon at least ONE of those will apply again... But maybe Im wrong? Would love to hear from someone "on the ground" over there?

this is the positive out of it all to date - teething probs was a given no diff to any new item/commodity let alone sport.
The foundations we're there just needed a model to start with and here we are.
There is also no given that every foundation club would do well and contest solidly, time pass's after all these years of getting this started.
Hence SU issues were nothing like as such going back from the first Foundation process approvals.
SO - well they have benn more up and down than SU the last 5seasons at least but importantly passed through due to hitting the financial pass mark.

All a great learning curve so far - as you say there will be quite a few clubs sitting on the fence who did apply but got knocked back and they know why - IF/when they are ready to address the needs obviously they will get the green light when the Championship is reviewed I suspect before mid next season.

If anything, the foundation clubs faltering is a GOOD thing.,. Means there is more merit to a true national division formed ONLY from state champions..... I would be more than happy with year 3 of the Championship to be ONLY the top 2 x finishers in each confederation ... make EVERYONE earn their spot... then you will see some fantastic NPL football I reckon. Follow that up with a true comp, whoever doesn't perform gets relegated back to NPL and let the cream rise and the shit sink...... football... as we WANT it.

Still no formal match reports... at the very least they have lineups now (no positions) but that's all. Props to Austadiums for keeping all the attendance numbers somewhere, although the official IG is getting better at reporting those - 6 this week as opposed to 2 last week.
It's not as if they aren't keeping track of the basic events somewhere - they have the half time and full time stat summaries - but why aren't they being published?

Remember if it goes to a full h/a the talent will consolidate. I think it’s a bit rash to write off Sydney united and Sydney Olympic as clubs and as prospects for the championship because they’ve not performed to their optimum. Clubs have good and bad periods on and off the field, fortunes change etc. neither one of them have put their best foot forward thus far, but then again neither one of them were coming into the comp at their best, and they should be held to account but I still think I still think if/when these club are at their best they are more than worthy members of the club that is the championship

I fully agree and by no means writing them off. After the season South just had, I am well aware of what the anxiety of going into this comp at our lowest point feels like.

More so Im saying that the foundation clubs (and yes mine included) have the luxury of knowing that despite results this year, they have another bite of the cherry next season.... If it was merit based perhaps the pre-season signings would have been more robust?

yer I hear you - look tbh its ok seeing attendance but I'm not overly fussed there but I sure like to see the game stats.
I lol seeing the line ups but not in position format.
Hope they are reading the forum mate :)

i didn't think our crowd of 1,800 was bad in round 1.

don't be so naive to think the 4k crowd at APIA was only APIA fans. The reason why the crowd was so good as it was, it because of the large number of away fans that attended

Correct, that was a joint effort. I think ~ 2k give or take is probably the base support for the 4 Sydney foundation clubs

I could be wrong but im pretty sure I saw a reported figure of approx 900? Although I still think even it it was 1.8k, is still not good.

Yes, in relation to APIA, thats why I put "thus far".

we sold just under 1000 tickets online a day before the game.

like i said before, our gate sales were never taken into consideration. You can blame our club for that, it's a tactic they've been using for years.
