I always believed the best option for football would be to convert North Hobart Oval into a rectangular stadium. Maybe that could be the secondary location?

North Hobart Oval would be good as a secondary option to base a prospective Tasmanian A-League side out of when Mac Point is unavailable especially given that it's hosted A-Leagues matches previously and could be the home ground for their Dub games also.

Have just listened to this one, pretty much what it says in the screenshot. Rockliff did specifically harp on about York Park way more, which is odd since I think rectangular games would be way better at Mac Point than York Park, but I guess if they want to start sooner rather than later, there is only one option!

If Tony Pignata is giving up on a Tassie A-League side then it's also likely he'll want to give up on Tasmanian sides in the National Second Division.

He already has..... My belief is that this is all part of the "unbundling" of APL clubs having to bear the burden and cost of academies... watch this space in 1-2 years.

This is exactly why we need an A-League Men and Dub side in Tasmania so that football is not relegated to the back pages of the papers in favour of other codes.

After Wednesday's announcement the Hobart Hurricanes will return to UTAS Stadium for a Big Bash League game this summer, Stadiums Tasmania chief executive James Avery said another clear goal is to secure an NRL match played for premiership points.

Tasmania premier Jeremy Rockliff held meetings with officials from the Storm and A-League club Melbourne Victory in late May, which were described as 'positive'.

Avery said the goal is to lock in a multi-year deal with any prospective suitors, not a 'one-off'.

Now-defunct A-League club Western United has played regular games at UTAS Stadium previously, but the ground's dimensions ensured it was a poor viewing experience for fans. Avery insisted the multi-million dollar upgrades to the facility will solve that issue.

"The redevelopments at UTAS Stadium, particularly bringing the seating closer to the boundary, is really conducive to the viewing experience for rectangular sports," he said. "That's been part of our discussions with all the major rectangular codes in Australia. Some of the barriers there are going to be overcome.

"It's also been billed into some of the design work for Macquarie Point. Stadium Tasmania's very clear view is these are multi-purpose venues, not just for football and cricket. They really need to cater for the full gamut of events."

"We know soccer has a really strong following in Tasmania. That's why we're pursuing talks with the Victory and to make sure Football Tasmania plays a leading role in that as well. A lot of people have sat up and paid attention to the benefits. The investment (in stadiums) means our venues are now at a standard where other codes are keen to explore opportunities in Tasmania they previously hadn't even considered."

I hope they're not suggesting this upgrade is part of any soccer funding. Give us North Hobart Oval or give us death!

I haven't seen anything like that. It's just the state+federal funding that was announced as part of the AFL team package. I was told the "steeper rake & closer seating" thing about Macquarie Point when I had the chance to chat to Anne Beach (MPDC CEO) as part of the stadium showcase display they had on late last year, so at least it is consistent!

Still, York Park is such a physically large ground, I can't see how much different it will make. Much more optimistic about Macquarie Point where that thinking has formed part of the initial construction.

Stadiums Tasmania has a lot on their plate at the moment, I wonder when the ideal time is to start dropping hints to them that they should take NHO out of HCC's hands!
