They should have played Lyon instead of one so the right arm pacemen - Neser, Doggett or Boland.
Neser came off this time under lights after looking relatively innocuous in the first innings and the daylight sessions yesterday, but Lyon would have changed the rhythm of the game in the daylight sessions. I'm also basing this on the amount of surprising turn that Jacks generated.
I agree on Lyon, but we simply misjudged the pitch.
I think they expected more sideways movement swing and seam.
The biggest issue for batsmen was variable bounce.
Given how we expected the pitch to play leaving Lyon out was reasonable.
Aussies made a selection mistake and had two of our better bowlers out injured, but we still won, and Neser bowled well.
Valuable experience for Neser and Doggett, but I don't expect them to play the next test.
Lyon got hit batting in Perth, that was another minor factor.

Neser outbowled both Doggett and Boland so deserves to play in Adelaide. But Boland will get the nod again unless Hazlewood makes a surprising recovery.
Fact is we didnt miss him. He is now being chosen on reputation as his best is behind him. All old horses have to go out to pasture some time.

Australia A secure a comprehensive victory, an innings and 137 runs, over the England Lions, built around Nathan McSweeney's outstanding undefeated 226 that powered their massive 588 first innings total. Disappointed this game was not live streamed.
I respectfully disagree with you and Richie.
I think Lyon would have prised a few out earlier yesterday in the daylight hours, or bowled a lot of containing overs and kept the pacemen fresher. England made the mistake of underbowling Jacks. Aus faced a lot of right arm pace.
I had to dash out in the middle of the early session yesterday and missed 20 mins of it. During the rest of the session I saw, and the early part of the second, the ball hardly beat the bat, or induced one false shot from quality, circumspect English Test batting, apart from the edge that went way above Green's head.
I agree thought that Doggett and Neser bowled better in the second innings. Their rhythm was good. More akin to what I've seen them do in the Shield live. However, I thought Stokes and Jacks were on top of the Aus bowlers until the changing light occurred.
Thanks for this Baggers. Heard reports yesterday. Webster made 44 on a flat track.
Mac's 226 NO innings was outstanding! He is only mid 20s too.
Not sure what the quality of the English Lions attack was?
The age factor being significant, Lyon needs to be replaced by Kuhnemann ( needs to play more red ball cricket), Murphy or Rocciocioli. They are all aged in their 20s too.
All pace attacks don't have enough variety. Aus needs a frontline spinner, despite supposedly pace friendly pitches.

Yes I agree Lyon picked would have mopped up their late innings in quick time.
I agree that it is time to give a young spinner a run.
I now think Lyon will be more effective playing every second or third test. Evetnually i would just pick Lyon when we are playing 2 spinners.
Batsmen are used to him and age is a factor, well rested and fresh, age is less of a factor. And trying to prove a point might be a factor.
The fact that it was Lyon factored into my thinking, but I expected Webster to be in the team and bowl some better quality part time spin.
Sometimes a spinning all rounder is good enough .Jacks is in that category and his batting was handy for England.
Green is the pace alrounder and his bowling also seemed better in second innings.
If the wicket is really favouring pace, then 3 pacemen + Green can take the wickets and an extra batsman might be handy. Anything less than a really juicy wicket a team needs a specalist spinner.

As an all rounder, Green can't bowl longer, sustained spells - yet. He is still fragile. At least he is young though.
Although Kuhnemann has barely played any red ball cricket this season, he, Murphy and Rocciocioli, have taken plenty of Shield wickets - and are all aged in their 20s. So we need them taking precedence over Lyon's experience. I can't get over some players hanging on whilst declining and ageing, refusing to retire. The selectors have been too soft with them.
IMO selectors should have tapped Warner, Usman and GOAT earlier. Many Cricket Tas Members disagree. They seem to be overly sentimental and want to see players with send offs of their choice. Pro sport doesn't work like that!
IMO have the recent Test retirees presented to the public at a Test match before play - after they've retired.
Off forum I know heaps of artists, musicians and authors, who just won't accept they've had their time and won't retire. Many of them aren't aware of the talent coming through in younger gens.
One of the bonuses of an Ashes series is the visiting English media.
I've loved seeing Stuart Broad, Nasser Hussain and Mike Atherton on YouTube Sky podcasts. These guys are articulate, knowledgeable and analytical. Our resident expert, Richie, might not learn much, but many of the rest of us may acquire some insights.
One of them rams home that Brook and Crawley shouldn't drive on the up in Aus. Ostensibly, it has worked for them elsewhere but not on Aus's huge grounds.
Thee is also a Steve Harmison podcast, plus a Butcher version.
I thought Crawley scored decent runs in both innings, quickly, at the Gabba.
They also constantly shed light on how little pink ball day/night cricket the Poms have played?
There is a school of thought about moving Jacks to number 3 in the batting order?
Another I had no idea of, is that McCallam, is supposedly not a trained cricket coach, and has had no previous experience coaching state/provincial sides prior to England.
Sadly, the Sky panellists, claim that many decent coaches traverse the world chasing T20 big money over Test coaching, so that is why England opted for MacCallam, whilst Jason Gillespie was available as a coach for England. I find it hard to believe?

Webster has been dropped after having a batting average of 35 and a bowling average of 23.

Richie points to a smaller sample size - true. He bowls finger spin, can bowl long spells of pace. He took 8 Shield wickets against South Aus in his last Shield match getting Carey and Head out twice each.
He is also an arguably better slips catcher than Smith. His batting form isn't brilliant ATM, but Aus has kept specialist batters Warner, Usman and Labu, in the team for long spells, averaging 25-30 for a couple of years!
How did Inglis get ahead of Webster?
A lot of the Aus public haven't seen the overseas series against Sri Lanka and the Windies, where Webster made some tough runs, with the top order failing. Webster was also decisive in beating India late in the tough home series.

Every time i saw Webster play in the test team he seemed to do well.
The performances last summer against India are what I remember. And India are a tough team to beat.
Another factor is at home grounds the team needs 2 spinners and at other grounds the team isn't even sure that they need a spinner. Webster is ideal in both situations.
I was impressed with his fielding, batting and bowling, perhaps not exceptional but solid and IMO reliable in all 3 areas.
I don't think Lyon is bowling much better than him.
My issue with Lyon isn't just age, i think that he is not the bowling threat that we was a fee years ago.
I don't understand why Inglis played instead of Webster. If they were leaving out Lyon, Webster needed to play. And if they wanted to play Inglis and Webster they should have omitted a pace bowler.

That'd be correct. Why then do you think he and Stokes introduced this form of batting he arrogantly named after himself, because that was the way he played his cricket over his Test career. He only averaged mid 30s from memory because he was a hit and miss cricketer.
