Summer of Cricket thread

It shouldn't, but I get annoyed with players playing all these T20 comps around the globe chasing cash, rather than playing Sheffield Shield cricket in prep for Tests.

Nothing annoyed me more than Cooper Connelly playing 4 Shield games and getting a Test in SL.

I watch every state team play at Bellerive over a season in the Shield every year. Cooper C has never played Shield cricket at Bellerive to the best of my knowledge. There are plenty of decent West Aussies who have played Shield cricket in Tas though.

His teammate, Corey Rocciocioli is a right arm finger spinner who bowls well with the red ball at Bellerive. CR should have been in SL instead of CC.

While I can understand your feelings towards the cash is king global T20 leagues around the world, the shortest form of the game is what the fans ultimately want and the future of test cricket absolutely needs T20 cricket to be flourishing. I'm a test cricket die hard so that even for me is hard to admit.

The balance with scheduling is nowhere near worked out and I mean look how underdone England are walking into their biggest Ashes series in a very long time purely because they have been forced to play three meaningless ODIs vs NZ.

As for Connolly, I don't think he was picked in that test for his bowling alone and it was his all round ability with both bat and ball that won him that spot, albeit he was chosen on talent and not hard graft in the shield that I will agree with.

My take is there should be and needs to be more crossover with long form and short form cricket and I don't see why first class sides and even test nations can't find players that can make quickfire 50s and more. Some test nations stick with players that barely average 30 just because, when often selecting one of more proven white ball cricketers may get more reward in the long run.

You've made heaps of good points.

At the last Cricket Tas AGM, we had a fair bit of time discussing cricket with the CEO and Sec of Cricket Tas after the public event.

I have to admit, it is T20 that is making cricket so popular around the world. All the subcontinental residents of the USA and Canada are boosting numbers in player participation and the game is moving forwards.

Even Guyana, which is becoming quite rich, is hosting a major club T20 world championship. So there is a lot of revenue being pumped into cricket, and as you suggest, the public want to see T20 - not Shield or FC cricket.

The biggest cash cow in Aus sport is still Test cricket though - according to the upper echelons of Aus cricket.

Same here but we have to be realistic. Thankfully most Ausies in these global franchises are not part of our Test set up. Only hoping that some of our most promising next genners are not mesmerized by the big money on offer. To me that appears as the biggest downside to this global T20 extravaganza.

club T20 world championship
Really give me more info mate as there used to be the same tournament about 15 yrs ago. I followed it and enjoyed the concept, then suddenly it was cancelled. From memory an Aussie side won it one yr.

Only when five Tests are played in an Ashes or India series DC. Cricket Australia was hit with a whopping $60m in lost revenue last 12 mths mainly due to Tests finishing in three days. Therefore we can expect tedious batting friendly pitches for the upcoming Ashes to ensure five days of play so CA can recoup some of that loss and rebuild their coffers..

Not sure much about it, apart from them telling me it is on, Baggers?

What they were telling me/us is all series. It is because of India, and the Indian global diaspora.

They are so interested in cricket, any Test Aus plays has interest for the huge numbers of Indians anywhere. I’ve met Indian expats in Switzerland, Italy, Scotland, who love cricket so much, they know all about any Aus Test player.

Let alone all the Indian members of state cricket orgs in India who visit Tas Crick Members as tourists for reciprocal rights.

I’m yet to meet an Indian male who doesn’t love cricket!

Jack visited the World Test Champ Final Aus against India. He reckons there were 4percent Aus fans, a few Pom neutrals, and the rest supported India - in England!

Indians are driving a world boom in cricket, Baggers!

AUSTRALIA SQUAD FOR FIRST ASHES TEST:

Steve Smith (capt), Sean Abbott, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Brendan Doggett, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald, Beau Webster

Jeez they are kidding with Abbott. Teachers pet. Bailey needs to be more proactive with the transition of Australia, says our batting great Steve Waugh. He says Warner was kept too long and couple of others seem to be also. "We dont want all our best players leaving at the same time, so there needs to be some tapping on shoulders''. I got news for you Tugga, they all will. I say if Khawaja fails to post a decent score in first two tests and Starc leaks runs and doesnt bag a pile of wickets, then this pair should be first cabs off the rank to be sent into retirement.

Have found this info guys.
The World Club Championship, a new, global successor to the long-discontinued Champions League T20 (CLT20), is set to make its return in 2026. The tournament is designed to be bigger, bolder, and more inclusive as it aims to bring champion teams from the world’s leading T20 leagues, offering fans a spectacular showcase of inter-league clashes.

The Champions League T20 that was the tournament I alluded to DC. This will include our BBL champ plus runner up too I expect.

Abbott is old at 33 to be a Test pace bowler starting out.

Steve Waugh thinks Bailey won’t made hard calls.

Just not as keen on franchise cricket as national and state, Baggers.

Weatherald finally gets a go, but a shame younger players, Konstas and McSweeney, have been overlooked.

Konstas was only overlooked because his form wasn't good during the Test series in the West Indies but if he does well for New South Wales in Sheffield Shield then he may be a shout for the rest of the series.

Have been a big fan of Doggett. Lovely action!
Hes 31, so no pup either. Another specialist seamer like Josh.

Same here. But this new tournament is a way to showcase each countries T20 club/state cricketers on the world stage. The Hobart Hurricanes may win or be runner up in the BBL so it will be them repping us Aussies globally, ditto Sydney Sixes or Sydney Thunder or Perth Scorchers, etc.
