My poor son who i showed the uruguay game to is watching the replaym. He asked where harry kewell and lucas neill are and if aloisi is retired

Going to have to say we have the most epic injury crisis and all those players are retired

We've got roughly 18 months of Robertson evidence and whenever he turns up people are amazed. Portsmouth and Cardiff fans couldn't believe what they had. Recent times has seen him injured but one he's ready he'll be an asset.

So
We look good from koff whilst teams are settling in - check, at most times when it’s most passive start of games.
Right, that means we need to score in those opening 10/15 before we stop playing and play poppa sit deep and the opponent starts to lift their intensity.
My o my

Used to look our worst in that first 15 to be fair

Wouldn't hurt to exploit early opportunity but the game still presented space, we just didn't act on it. 41:38. Irvine gets it. Miller in ages of space for a diagonal ball but Irvine just passes to our defenders. This is a glaring example of twitter with screenshots. It's horrendous how much Space and time Irvine has but just goes back.

Time to get Balard and Robertson starting as they have great awareness. Sadly Nisbet won't be considered.

Water under a bridge and all but the third goal saw a massive use of hands on Balard's back to head the ball. Immediate free kick. He's climbed over him.

I had to turn it off after the second goal, I was so pissed off watching those pampered pussies totally stuff up basic passing skills. Poppa was making excuses for them but they were all shit. Sure Poppa made mistakes. Playing out from the back when you're parking the bus doesn't usually end well. In the end, it's a trial game, but at the moment, we'll be last in our group.

What did Popa trial?

Tactics or players?

Because the tactics are the same; and, the new players like Okon jr and Ovary arent even first team starters, or have a hand full of games under there belt. When there's players like Devlin on the bench, and a Johnny Warren Medalist shut-out (and before anyone mentions where Nizzys playing, ask yourself does national team interest not contribute to that).

Totally forgot about Overy. Would've been a very tough debut but he looked good for the U20. Should've given him and Elder the start to see if we could've gotten more wing play.

naturally exploiting early when most opponents are settling is a great time to score early - alas we have hardly done that even in the good days - I did like seeing Toure's position looking to run on that over the top ball, I mentioned it earlier as a good positive very unlike us.
Regards to space, yep there is always space and many times not just these games our mids be it Irvine and many others take the soft safe approach. Our mate Behich keeps doing that as well - worse has the space to go forward attacks his line then stops, turns the ball back.
I think this approach is ingrained in our game more and more and worse when you don't have creative players in the middle like Mooy of the past who see the space, diagonal balls, over the top of defense's when pushing up etc....
You see this game of playing safe/reset instead of going forward in the APL time in time out as well - its trained since their YL spells.

I'm guilty jumped out of starting gates post game of my disappointment - another trial squad - why has he bothered testing far more players than is needed ? we don't need 30/40.
He says he wants to expose young players, says in another article there is No Such Thing As a Friendly !
How many NT's leading into a WC flip their selections that much ?
Not many that we can tell barring injuries, they play the next choice by X position for thats backing and oiling up your like for like.....

Grazor what happenned after the 15min mark ? Columbia started to find their groove plain and simple - stepped up their effort and forced errors/stress/and forced us back.
Basic Rule #101 football especially when you have talented players like they have nothing stats will help, you either got it or you don't and simply Poppa putting on a starting line up as such the bubble was gonna burst.

Positive is the City Keeper stepped up.

If he keeps performing he's a good option for WC

After 15 Colombia lifted and we backed off and the difference was clear. In saying that there were still moments with plenty of space while we were on the ball. We just didn't take it.

It's an interesting watch because we expected to not have any room but it wasn't like facing Japan.

JS, latinos/sth merican are far more expressive than comparing to the methodical risk adverse keep to the plan Asian/Japanese.
Besides when you dominate that much and your opponent being camped in their own half like we were when getitng the ball spaces are there to be exposed naturally/always but we take the wrong options as mentioned for its the same in top league situations also hence scoring on the counter or at least create the opportunity.
Pretty normal to me - just comes down are you good enough to take the advantage.

He will never forgive Nisbet for laying on the first goal in his 4th Grand Final loss. Miguel Di Pizio scored in that game. He has no chance of ever playing for Poppa 😉

I did not get to watch the Colombia game and bloody Google showed me the score before I got to watch the replay. I have no interest in watching a "meaningless" game that we lost.

My take on this window is that, frustrating and annoying as it was to watch, Popa has tried some things and seen some people that will help him decide who and how he wants to arrange our larger squad.

Like others, I would have expected Popa to be refining his choices in this window rather than testing outliers. My best guess is that he has already got his first team and squad fixed (injuries aside) and considered it more useful to test the waters on some others that he was considering rather than letting the team gel and find some form as a playing group.

I have to say that the team Popa puts up in the next window will have to be the closest he can get to our World Cup team and squad if we are to see any sort of polish on our play.

Having said that, the one advantage there probably is in the defensive football that Popa implements is that he can put any player who has an understanding of the system into it and they will produce basically the same result as any other player in that position.

in every game there will be a limited number of long balls through and over, or crosses in, and whoever he puts up front will be frequently isolated and expected to seize the few decent moments they get.

He can put in Bos and get an extra way forward - but his system does not depend on that. It is only our watching sanity that requires such flamboyant (meaning positive and effective) displays.

I did not enjoy this window at all - but Popa does not coach for my expectations or approval.
