Socceroos vs Turkey 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺🇹🇷

Why is everyone calling them Turkey-yah?
I appreciate the native pronunciation would be different, it just seems strange and a bit cringe.
Turkey under President Recip Tayyip Erdoğan (a nationalist dictator) changed their official English name from the “Republic of Turkey” to the “Republic of Türkiye” to match the Turkish name (Türkiye Cumhuriyeti), so in official contexts people refer to it as Türkiye (the native name). However, the common name remains Turkey.

Yeah it’s certainly not a good democracy. Even though they almost voted him out he completely abuses his power. Turkey’s government now is more corrupt and socially backwards than it was in the past, as is Iran’s.

The "sultan" has promsied a hot Summer, lets see if he is willing to push too far in July and whether the EU is worth the paper it was printed on.

Same, except I'd swap Herrington with Degenek for the first game, the kid was a bit nervy against Mexico, Degenek's experience could help. Once everything has started and that initial game is done, Herrington can start. That's my thinking.

Turkish govt have asked the world to respect the change in their country's name. As Tom Jones sang, it's not unusual. Burma --> Myanmar;
Ceylon-- - > Sri Lanka; New Zealand --> Aotearoa (I wish)

I like it. That's a strong team, (with a worry about the DMs)

I'm happy with Herrington. I trust Popa on choosing defenders. Takes one to know one. But if you're right about nerves, I'd play Burgess before Degenek. Especially for his clever long passes

The matchday XI for our World Cup opening game looks solid but personally I'd only have two centre backs in Souttar and Circati, replacing Lucas Herrington with either Cam Devlin in midfield or having Kai Trewin as a third defensive midfielder who can act as a midfield anchor or libero instead.
