Socceroos vs Turkey 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺🇹🇷

Turkey will press us when we play out from the back. It's so obvious. The issue is when we play out from the back, everyone has their back to the opponent's goal. So we pass it back as we feel the press from behind.

The formation is terrible. If the inside forwards or wingbacks go ahead the only cut back options at the 2 mids who need to stay deep. We have an awful amount of space around the 10 not being used. Irvine and O'Neill can't hit the target most of the time.

The only thing that's going to give us chance is if we play out quickly with triangles and get past the midfield line. The wing backs or inside forwards start cutting inward to offer something. It's so much ground to cover. Bos can get up there. Italiano a bit on delay.

I think the two wing backs will get some opportunities at the far post or if crosses go all the way through so late runs are good.

Otherwise our best chances are from set plays or pressing their defence and forcing turnovers.

I keep thinking we're going to have the typical Australian implosions at a world cup but I also keep reminding myself we've got Bos, Irankunda and Toure. We just need a few good moments. Our defence should be alright. Circati will lift this time as it's not a friendly.

It's the midfield that's an issue so it's probably best we play up the sides and don't give those two hospital passes.

Anything can happen, including getting grouped.. .nervous but lets go
I'm optimistic. I've said before - although defence is our strength, there are goals in this team. And our superstrength is our fight, team spirit and will-to-win. Won't be too unhappy with a draw, or even a 3-2 loss.

The constant backpassing to our defenders and Ryan is risky. Slips, oversteps and error happen. We really need to keep the ball safely away from goal. I'm just tired of Ryan receiving it and nervously touching or kicking it. Just don't do this anymore.

We're more likely to score from a Turkish playout error than from build up play so keep it down there and see what happens.

High scoring losses suck as you know you were capable but thalso gives hope for the next games.

Opening game. Go all out. Depending on what happens it's also vital we don't exhaust certain players and have appropriate rotation.

I think it's really in our interest to feed the ball past their lines to Toure or Irankunda in the hope we get clipped. Set plays and even potential red cards.

And from long passes which is 1 reason apart from experience for Burgess over Herrington.

I think Burgess has to get the nod. While he was excellent in both Japan games and the idea of not being able to cope is a myth, he had some hard games for Swansea and if it's a bad day then it's a bad day.

I know it's a question of pace but I think Degenek has something to do this tournament.

Degenek was excellent as a fullback last time and he defends his domain well.

I'd much prefer to start Devlin and then have Degenek at RWB on the team sheet but his role is much more if a fullback defending his area and sitting deeper. In turn it would allow Circati to roam forward in attacks.

We've stuffed up immensely as a Devlin and Robertson would be an excellent mobile pairing.

Way too late but I'd honestly be more content with Herrington and Circati on the 6 than the other 2. Back 3 of Geria, Souttar Degenek then. Herrington and Circati can actually pass and tackle.

The only thing Irvine does it helps maintain shape. He is so technically inept it isn't funny.

O'Neill needs to pretend he's facing Ecuador. He's got to give his absolute all.

Keep forgetting about Velupillay. He has x factor. If we could just start Devlin on the 6 and then have Irvine in front or somehow squeeze in Volpato and Velupillay we'd look good in transition.
