By my reckoning we have scored 20 goals in 14 matches since Poppa took over. This includes 5 against Indonesia and 3 in the away game to New Zealand. Shows what a dire return we have had in this period. Mind you, I didn't think Arnie's tenure was any better.

FUN FACT: The last two goals we have scored were both by Jordy Bos, 20 minutes in against USA and 85th minute against Cameroon. Between them were two goalless losses to Columbia and Venezuela.

OK so here is where things stand heading into Matchday 3. I haven't looked at the overall 3rd places yet.



Specifically for Australia and New Zealand (since they are the two groups I'm really looking at - considering 2nd in those groups play each other - plus it has Aus and NZ)

On standard metrics, Australia would be in third heading into the final matchday - however as head to head is the primary tie-breaker now, the victory on opening day against Turkey puts them ahead (despite being down on overall goals scored to Turkey). Essentially, this means a draw against...

Turkey and USA ends in a 0-0 draw, which means a draw for Australia against Paraguay will be enough for them to advance as runners up, and a loss to Paraguay will see Australia knocked out in 4th place of the group.

This scenario alone shows how important wins will be given the head to head. I know this would be played at the same time, but essentially the difference between a draw and a loss could be 2nd place, or going home

Wow so with these sim results - Australia advance in second due to head to head of beating Turkey. However, are tied on goal difference, goals scored, etc etc, so would have gone down to disciplinary history under the usual tie-breakers. If that was tied as well, Turkey would get the runner up spot due to being ranked higher on the FIFA rankings
