Socceroos vs Canada/USA Oct 25

One would think so, but in a lot of the Popa games, the other team gets plenty of snapshots, but there are often Socceroo defenders in between them and the goal when they shoot.

Whereas we appear to get less chances, but they are often with less opposition defenders in between the goal and the Aus shooter, or none at all.

Popa's priority is keeping the 4 in the midfield line and the 3 in the defensive line, in the 3-4-3 - or the 2 (5-2-3) to 4 in the midfield line, and the 5 at the back in the 5-4-1, compact at all times in Ball Possession Opposition.

Aus rarely has to turn around and chase running towards their own defensive goal.

I'm fed up of watching Aus play less time with the ball, but love Popa's results!

I'm at the 12 min mark of the replay compiling stats, and it never looks as bad on the replay as what I think watching live.

A lot of the good things Aus are doing are harder to see live - like Bos's spectacular runs being easy to appreciate, or Iran's shooting and dribbling.

At the 12 min mark, Canada have had quite a few fast ball carrying actions where they've had a player running with the ball for 15 metres or more. It looked great live, but Aus winning more 1v1s is harder to see live.

I've seen Grazor ask experienced refs like Nic Car Bel or Muz what they thought of the refereeing? I'd love to know too? I thought Canada should have been penalised for starting all the niggle.
Central American referee likely to see far worse.
He handled pretty well except Laryea should have got a yellow card about 10 minutes earlier. Plus he should have warned the same player when he pointed his finger at Italiano where he appeared to accuse him of diving early in the first half

Are you an experienced ref, Paul?

I've done a lot refereeing at junior and youth level, not wanting to do it, but I haven't done much senior refereeing.

We have a couple of guys on here who are. We need more!

Rowles is a centreback, not a wingback. Assume Behich and hopefully Gersbach will be the left wing backs.
Miller came in late, so did not start. Italiano was a last minute replacement in any case

Rowles was the best ball winner at Left WB against the Kiwis - by some margin.

ATM he is struggling against his direct opponent running at him with the ball at his feet, but when it comes to body on body contact, heading and 50/50 tackling, Rowles is on top.

Didn't cope with Buchanon and was clearly targeted as a weakness.

It will be Bos (to be challenged by Farrell) for the next ten years.

Talking about Farrell

To be honest I don't agree with all parts of the article. Yes - in the the original rivalry he got sent off after being unfairly targeted with trips but with Farrell (not directly mentioned in the article) it was different. Irankunda is an aggressive player, he fouls defenders - pushes thems. pulls their shirt and then complains when he receives it back in kind. The trips from Miranda and others in the original rivalry are not on, but he also needs to start to realise that if you play a robust game you may well get a robust game returned to you and if you have someone that won't back down you can be put off your game completely.

He has to learn that the tactics are a game in themselves - to smile and laugh them off rather than getting wound up by them.

Diamanti could be a dirty bastard but the smile and extended hand to his victims went a long way to keeping it impersonal.

A tough old Irish bugger I worked with years ago said that if someone hurt you in Gaelic football you didn't show it. You got up, gave them a smile, and remembered their face/number. It is the immediacy of Irankunda's reactions that need to be controlled. In a long game of football you have plenty of chances to add just a little - but not in the heat of the moment or straight after.

My five cents worth.

Disagree. I think the ten year build up to a world cup would be a massive shot in the arm for the game in Oz. Probably permanent in effect.

It's the greatest fear of the NRL and AFL.
Perhaps. If we do host I hope so. I'd actually be pumped if we did get to host and I'd be right behind it.

I'm skeptical it's a silver bullet for football in Australia though. It wasn't for the US. See article below.

P.S. Being my own devils advocate, skepticism over being able to deliver lasting benefits from hosting a WC is no reason not to have ambition and try. Sometimes you just need to back yourself.

P.P.S. This is a super interesting topic and deserves its own thread.

True, he'll temper with age, he's still pretty young.
I think that Canadian player running in with the flying kick set him off, I'm surprised no one's mentioned it.

Argentina's scheduled game in India in November is expected to be cancelled. As the first game is in Angola, they want to be closer to Africa, so the opponent for the second game could be Morroco and the game will be played in Africa.

It would've been a bigger inconvenience for Argentina than ourselves but a ridiculous concept from the start. Japan's wiki has Ghana and Bolivia as November opponents so here's hoping both games were hot air and we can have a European based camp.

I actually expect it to be in the ME or Australia for Popovic to give A League players a chance but I think they can be mostly spared.

It has been fantastic to have these friendlies in Sept and Oct. I wonder if Poppa might just do a training camp in Nov if there are no decent opponents available. Selfishly, I would prefer games, though.

Would like to play euro countries to avoid injuries from travel but guessing none would be available

Things will be clearing up pretty soon with other confederations so hopefully we can get someone like Cape Verde in and Albania in London. Playing in Bochum and Hannover wouldn't go astray....

Quick glace sees most still with 2 games or friendlies sorted amongst themselves. Don't have the energy to trawl the wikis right now. Something will be announced soon you'd think.

The answer is yes. I have been a referee for about 8 or 9 years officially mostly at association levels (mens, womens, boys, girls) and as well as youth NPL level in Western Sydney.

I’ve reached the 45 min mark of the replay slowly recording stats and despite Rowles having difficulty jockeying, showing, delaying, and negating Buchanon’s pace, with 50/50 tackles, body on body duels and heading 1v1s, Rowles has a plus ledger in 1v1 duels.

Canada seem to have strict instructions to close down Rowles quickly, sprinting at him maniacally. They have effected a few turnovers against Rowles.

As I repeatedly suggest, watching live we are captured by big moments.

Also, Italiano is performing better in the slowed down replay, than I thought live. His technique has improved since I watched him for the Aus u23s.

Canada have a big central striker who is a handful for the Aus defence.
