Socceroos vs Canada/USA Oct 25

only caught the last 15 of the second half after watching all first half, why were the Canadians so aggressive in that final 15? Lots of pushing/shoving the ref allowed, for whatever reason.

No saves by their keeper is lamentable. Certainly need to work on chance creation and hitting the target. Compared to how much ball Canada got near our goal but our defence held firm.

How many cards?
To be fair it was all just a bit of handbags. The Canadians pretty much always with the first push if I remember correctly, and we just pushed back. Good to see the no one retaliated with anything above the chest, and also that no one made more out of it than it was.

Frustration with themselves. Game build up was pretty big over there I heard. They just came off wins in Romania and Wales but hadn't banked on Australia's defensive stubbornness.

Had Duke scored at the end there it would've been a solid troll moment. How great for the Australian supporters at the game to see the result.

I do like this style better, start our talented young players first, let them play the game and then bring on the workhorses at the end like Duke instead of how we usually do it the other way around. No reason why Duke should start over Toure.

When Popa brought Duke on it clearly said we were holding out for the 0-1 win in true Popa style - but despite that we still put some quality pressure on Canada.

The ref allowed too much to pass unchecked and the result was what we see in a lot of games like that - the niggle gets worse and worse and the real threat of injury looms. I find it lazy reffing to issue yellow cards to the protagonist and the victim (like O'Neil's yellow) rather than just punishing the one guilty person.

Irankunda was seeing Red United again at the end. If the Canadian had simply stood his ground and smiled condescendingly Irankunda would have lost it and been gone.

Very lucky for us to keep a clean sheet. Huge credit to Izzo for his part and the defence for scrambling, but we got lucky not to concede. Equally, we were unlucky not to have had ore composure and scored at least one more from our other chances and half chances.

I expected Miller to be skinned every time with his slower turning speed but he only got tested that way once and did get burned. Another coach will have noticed his difficulty going with sheer pace and will target it more.

Canada play with the Ice Hockey mentality I think - a shirt front here, a push there, definitely leading with the forearm given the opportunity - up to the ref to stop that early and he didn't.

Jordy Bos got impeded but the ref was allowing that. His impact is reduced when he isn't allowed to play football. He was still effective after he learned how the game was being played.

It was a hard game to enjoy with Canada having the better attacking combinations and us struggling to be seen in the game especially the first half. But that is the Popa plan. Hold tight then play more expansive attacking football in the second half. I agree with TSF too - Popa is producing results regardless of the overly defensive lean at times.

He is sticking with some attacking options though. The balance is a lot better than the defensive nine with a lone striker we had fallen into before.

Get in there Irankunda. Toure has a bigger man's clumsiness in the fast, reactive moments. He presents but does struggle to get himself positioned and balanced in time. To me, that has always been the case. He does offer something and creates pressure too so I can live with that.

The goal felt so good, and the final whistle couldn't come soon enough with the pressure mounting.

Duke did fuck all when he was out there. I don’t agree that he presses well, he gallops around slowly like a giraffe and doesn’t get close enough to pressure a defender most times. And he can’t receive and hold the ball either.
