Soccer Ashes thread

NZ will be fielding a full strength line up, Socceroo's pretty much fielding a side full of A-league players. All Whites will def get the win over both matches. On paper NZ have the better players and should get the job done pretty easy.

I just can't wait to play Irvine O'Neill and Behich again in both games just to ensure we know their full capabilities.

Stupid timing in a way but Popovic will contradict himself and still pick A League players. Two NZ games would've been better in the October window.

For WC qualifiers it's a long way to go but you do it. For friendlies, maybe here we should consider one or two at club level and save them for the North American window. I hope Sapsford isn't banged up too badly as he'd be good for the NZ window.

I think Bos is worth taking as Feyenoord will likely use their other left backs when fit.

The Kiwis have just named their squad.

What do you want to see in these friendlies?

I'd like a Segecic start, Bennie at RWB, Balard at CM, Irankunda.

What happens to Matt Ryan? I think you pick him for the squad, important for culture, but Izzo starts. He is helped that a lot of the other options are injured, or not playing as well.

I think Matty is one of a few players who should be invited but not play.
Goodwin and Behich could also come into camp to train only as they are out of season and we know what they offer.

Previous squad:
  • Daniel Arzani (Melbourne Victory) - Not playing
  • Aziz Behich (Melbourne City) - A liga
  • Brandon Borrello (Western Sydney Wanderers) - A liga
  • Kasey Bos (Melbourne Victory) - Not playing
  • Martin Boyle (Hibernian, Scotland)
  • Cameron Burgess (Ipswich Town, England)
  • Anthony Caceres (Sydney FC) - A liga
  • Alessandro Circati (Parma, Italy)
  • Milos Degenek (FK TSC Bačka Topola, Serbia)
  • Mitchell Duke (FC Machida Zelvia, Japan) - Limited minutes but no different to previous selections
  • Joe Gauci (GK, Aston Villa, England) - Not playing
  • Jason Geria (Albirex Niigata, Japan) - Not playing
  • Paul Izzo (GK, Randers FC, Denmark)
  • Riley McGree (Middlesbrough, England) - Not playing
  • Connor Metcalfe (St Pauli, Germany) - Limited minutes
  • Lewis Miller (Hibernian, Scotland) - borderline limited minutes
  • Paul Okon-Engstler (Benfica, Portugal) - A liga
  • Aiden O’Neill (New York City, USA)
  • Kye Rowles (D.C. United, USA)
  • Mat Ryan (GK, RC Lens, France) - Not playing
  • Mohamed Toure (Randers FC, Denmark) - Not playing

  • Ryan Teague (Melbourne Victory) - Limited minutes
  • Marco Tilio (Melbourne City) - Not playing
  • Kai Trewin (Melbourne City) A liga
  • Patrick Yazbek (Nashville SC, USA)
We have 9 players from the last squad getting regular-ish minutes at the start of the season.
  • Martin Boyle (Hibernian, Scotland)
  • Cameron Burgess (Ipswich Town, England)
  • Alessandro Circati (Parma, Italy)
  • Milos Degenek (FK TSC Bačka Topola, Serbia)
  • Paul Izzo (GK, Randers FC, Denmark)
  • Lewis Miller (Hibernian, Scotland)
  • Aiden O’Neill (New York City, USA)
  • Kye Rowles (D.C. United, USA)

Actually quite a short list of people who have started the season with a lot of minutes and are not injured at the moment.

My squad is tricky given the distance and feel like Murphy's law with stupid injuries. Tuesday in NZ may see those from the Canberra game head back to Europe earlier like in 2022. Let Ryan sort his club and not travel all the way this time.

Gauci Beach (Izzo) Thomas

Karacic Bennie Miller Burgess Circati Degenek Rowles Geria J Bos Elder

Balard Metcalfe O'Neill Yazbek Devlin Nisbet

Segecic Boyle Irankunda Yengi Milanovic Silvera Piol (Toure, Sapsford)

I'm sure I've missed someone but this lot have been playing and well to boot. A League outfielders shouldn't be considered but this stupidly means they'll get in for the more attractive North American window where Borrello, Behich, Caceres and Taggart should have nothing to do with.
