Poppa Out

But he's refused to play players that most Aussie football fans wanted to see - Triantis (now lost), Segacic (when in form), Robertson, Sapsford (instead chose a player that's scored 5 goals in 3 years -A Toure), Devlin etc etc
With due respect, a professional football coach has had to undergo a vast amount of coach education. They usually have a great deal of coaching experience before they are appointed to coaching any national team. Popa has all this.

Fans who want to see certain players, who often have spectacular ability in 1or 2 areas of about 15 football performance criteria that players need to have for high level football, don't have anything like the ability of national team coaches, and their assistant coaching staff, to determine players' suitability for international football.

Robertson is in the frame. Popa says he isn't match fit ATM, but he has the requisite talent.

Devlin has struggled in previous Roo appearances. He may have improved recently though.

Triantis doesn't want to play for Aus. Forget him. Degenek has featured in a video elucidating dual national players not really wanting to be Socceroos.

Segecic, has a lot to work on to improve, to augment his incredible shooting.

Obviously this thread is a not going to happen. But imagine if it did. Would Guus come out of retirement to piss off his rival Advocaat by being the oldest World Cup Manager.

I raised this the other thread so we might just disagree about this selection philosophy. But if he can do this for the entire season sure consider him. But I don't think a good month in Aliga warrants a call up. Two good seasons and a strong start in Europe and I am happy for the call up (Balard), otherwise I'd rather see some consistent good performances over a longer period of time.
But you're happy with Okon's son?

I still prefer the path in my post. But I'm not upset by a Teague, Velupillay, Beach or even an Okon or Overy selection, depending on the makeup of the rest of the squad.

We have our guys who are a bit above the rest in the quality of their league / club. Irvine, Metcalfe, Ryan, Cicati, Bos, McGree, Burgess and Souttar (can probably argue the point about some of these but broadly I think it is fair). After this there are a lot of guys all in the mix. I have guys I like more than others, but it doesn't bother me and it isn't an injustice if they miss out. I like Nisbet and would be happy if he got picked. If he wants to guarantee selection he just needs to move to a bigger league / club.

I'm not really a fan of the Harry Kewell pathway. Fans and managers both like to 'discover' these guys but most of the time they are wrong. I think Kewell is the exception. Will Okon or Overy be the next Kewell? Unlikely. If Okon meant Irvine missed out this would be a problem. If Nisbet/Devlin/etc misses I don't care. These are the fringes of the team for the time being and in these friendlies it matters less.

I just couldn't watch the 2nd half of the Colombia game as I was really bored.

Australia have never been a clinical side in front of goal so even when playing in a way that tends to dominate possession under Ange couldn't dominate sides in the way the 2010 side under Verbeek did. Since 2014 qualifying has been a headache.

At World Cup's the level is much higher and Popa would want to be able to sharpen our attack to play more balanced football under pressure, playing dire football and squeezing into the Round of 32 as a best 3rd place getter shouldn't be seen as exceeding our expectations when the goal is to be finishing top 2 and avoiding a harder draw.

Much like Arnie used to lean on the "Aussie DNA" mentality Poppa seems to be pushing the "high standards" mantra that has worked at club level, hopefully that means through March and May/June with the best players selected the team is ready to surprise us all at the World Cup.

In my view, Poppa is just giving as many as he deems worthy, a taste of the national setup. I don't think he will be seriously considering many of these new players when the Cup comes around. I do however, challenge some of his choices as to which players get a "taste". For my money (and I could be biased) Badalato is one I would have chosen to get the experience and give him an incentive to perform consistently at a high level. AFC youth player of the year, player of the tournament at U20 Asia Cup. He's probably thinking WTF do I have to do?

Agree with most of that except Peraic--Cullen
super annoyed he was dropped. Reckon he was on a trajectory where if he started a few seasons in a row he could be on a trajectory to be a top roos keeper. He had big mistakes in his game - normal for his age, but he beat his xgot (meaning he was a good shot stopper) and had good distribution which was really promising signs

signing a hasbeen redmayne in his place will stall his development and stunt his ceiling

That was my first thought. But from all accounts Redmayne is setting a good example of what being a professional means. With Vuka, a very professional player and Redmayne with his teaching background he may learn a lot this season. Still very raw but in front of our other keepers. All of which seem pretty reasonable.

yeah redmayne has had an excellent start to the season but still filthy we are wasting this development opportunity. GK is a really weak position for the roos. If beach and gauci dont come good we could really drop a level there
