In what way is this AI slop?

Play the ball, not the man.

In the way that you've obviously used AI to generate it, because it bears all the hallmarks of an AI generated response.

The most obvious hallmarks are the use of "but" to start a sentence, the fact that half the sentences aren't actually grammatical sentences, the rhetorical questions, and the triplicate responses to them.

Are you seriously saying that you actually composed that post yourself?

You accused me of derailing a thread, yet here you are talking about AI instead of addressing anything I contributed to the chat.

Off you pop.

You were making an unfair judgment - literally - I can only go on what you said.

I have my own fairly negative views about the FA's coaching appointments but they have never made a precipitate appointment in terms of a coach's experience and success.

Anyway, let's not bore everyone else with semantics.

Herve Renard please.
Was it unfair? You literally want Milligan in the national setup and he has only had one season at the Jets. After Arnie won the title in 2017, there were chats in the media about Arnie as the future Socceroos coach.

Renard as well, someone who has success at places for a short period of time, then moves along. He also got sacked just before the World Cup, so I'd be curious why someone like him keeps getting moved on.

Do you always take everything so literally. I wasn't implying any coaches got hired after one year, but if you think talk about Popa or Arnie as they did with their club careers, they were definitely being spoken about as national coaches after their first season,.
When they were spoken about back then I think the word future always came before national coach. Pretty much the same as anyone talks about Milligan today.

I didn't accuse you of derailing the thread, I accused you of degrading the forum by using AI slop to construct a long-winded post.

I'll address what you contributed if, indeed, you contributed it yourself, rather than using AI to compose it.

You haven't answered whether or not you used AI, and given the strongly AI-reminiscent structure of your response, I remain extremely skeptical.

Being said after 1 season of success.

This is the point. We look at whoever is having success and going for them. We don't have a clear structure and identity because if we did, yes we could identify these managers, but we would be aligning them with that national structure

Arnie had done one or two things before that.

Sorry mate didn’t realise you were the guardian of the forum.

I’ve spoken of Roger Schmidt multiple times already in seperate posts.

I’ve expanded on the reasons why I think he would be a great fit as well as the pitfalls of falling into traps of employing ideologues or pragmatists.

You’ve already wasted 3-4 posts (I’ve lost count now) talking about AI, when you could have either addressed anything I raised or simply ignored it if it was too “long winded” for you.

Fuck me 🤦‍♂️

Was it AI generated or not?

If Football Australia is serious about taking the next step after this World Cup cycle, Roger Schmidt should be at the top of the shortlist.

Not because he's the biggest name. Not because he's German. But because he's exactly the type of coach Australia has rarely had.

For years we've bounced between two extremes. On one side we've had pragmatists who prioritise structure and organisation. On the other we've had coaches with a very clear football ideology. Schmidt sits comfortably in the middle.

He's tactically flexible.

That's the biggest thing for me.

Against Japan he can press high.

Against Argentina he can defend in a compact mid-block.

Against Saudi Arabia he can dominate possession.

Against Spain he can concede the ball and attack the space.

He isn't married to one formation or one philosophy. His job is simply to find the best way to win.

International football isn't about implementing a club system over 50 games. It's about solving a different tactical problem every three months. Schmidt has shown throughout his career that he can do exactly that.

Then look at his CV.

  • Austrian Bundesliga champion.
  • Primeira Liga champion with Benfica.
  • Domestic cups and Super Cups.
  • Champions League experience.
  • Managed in Germany, Austria, Netherlands, China and Portugal.
He's won trophies in different countries and under different conditions. That matters.

More importantly, he develops players.

Australia's next cycle isn't about squeezing one last tournament out of veterans. It's about building around players like Circati, Okon-Engstler, Herrington, Beach and the next generation coming through Europe.

Schmidt has consistently improved young players wherever he's gone. That's one of the defining traits of his coaching career.

People often assume he's another "Red Bull" pressing fanatic. I don't think that's a fair assessment anymore.

Early in his career, yes.

But his Benfica side could dominate possession one week, sit deeper in Europe the next and comfortably switch between a back four and back three depending on the opponent. That's exactly the sort of adaptability international football demands.

Finally, ask yourself this:

What is Australia's identity?

We're never going to be Spain.

We're never going to be Uruguay.

We're never going to out-Brazil Brazil.

Our strength has always been adaptability, athleticism, organisation and mentality.

Roger Schmidt doesn't try to make every team play the same way.

He builds around what the squad does well.

That, to me, is what the next Socceroos coach should be.

Not a football philosopher.

Not a defensive specialist.

A problem solver.

Roger Schmidt is one of the best problem solvers available.
A bit of context with Roger Schmidt at Benfica. Won in his first season than chased out the season after.

Yes agree his second season didn’t end well, but he did take Benfica to back-to-back quarter finals in the Champions League. Don’t think they’ve managed to replicate that since he left.
A bit hard to beat that in only a few seasons since. However, they got knocked out by Barca in the Round of 16 in 2024-25 and by Real Madrid in the playoff last season.
