In Farina's last tournament with us just before he got sacked we managed to score 5 goals against Germany and Argentina before running out of legs against Tunisia. It's not as if we had no attack before Guus. If anything he tightened up our defence a bit.

I think Guus taught us how to keep the ball, which till this day is still the best form of defense in the modern game and of course to be more cohesive on the pitch but that was all designed around possession.

I agree with this

Guus was actually quite defensive unless chasing the game, which we kept having to do

Farina was definitely more attacking

Japan, but also found out today Belgium as well.
Seems the FA has identified a successful style like 17 years ago, but then didn't follow through with a TD to support or a coach who believes in that style?

Of the top of my head Japan, Spain, Germany and recently Norway as examples I’m sure there is more too.

yeah belgium is interesting, I guess I'm curious if thats playing style or just shifting to more ssg in youth development

They’re both equally-valid IMO, though there’s no understating the extenuating circumstance of still having been no National Youth League to replace the NSL-era one, on top of youth-players in general being neglected in the first 1½ seasons of the A-League(which Ange alludes to in his opening spiel here)

I think if ange cant qualify the team, the team isnt good enough. Even back then he was a high quality coach by the standards of youth world cup qualifierd

The other thing to consider(that I forgot to mention in my prev. post) is that this was Ange’s second(?) youth-tournament campaign w/us as members of the AFC; he’d been dual-coach of the Joeys and Young Socceroos since Les Scheinflug&Raul Blanco left the setup after the ‘99 U17 WC.

What some people suggested in the wake of this interview(and I myself’ve come to subscribe to it) was that Ange had indeed gotten rusty as a result of being away from club-land for as long as he had(in context of how infrequently our youth-NTs played when we were still in the OFC); he’d had no other footballing commitments since leaving South Melbourne apart from serving as Socceroos co-assistant coach(alongside Arnie) under Frank Farina in the ill-fated 2001 WC qualifying campaign.
