Glenardo makes a valid point I hadn't considered before.
I would always wonder why it was (or at least that how it seems) that it was ALWAYS South Melbourne that was making the most noise about being left out of the Aleague.. I mean I know both Cro clubs stuck fast but, no disrespect to other NSL clubs, they seemed content with just "surviving" in NPL land. Why did it, at least on the surface, appear to matter more to us?
One possible reason could be exactly what Glenardo said, AFL was and is SO part of assimilationist culture down here that soccer become a sort of safety net, an enclave for multiculturalism as WE wanted it... It sounds weird but I think back now to conversations with relatives about sport and me being so madly into soccer and being called a "real Greek" as opposed to their kids who loved "da footy"... Maybe down here we clung to soccer for an identity reason as well as love of the sport, without even realising it? It could explain why myself and others felt so betrayed by Australian soccer on a fundamental level wheres other communities in Adelaide, Brisbane and even Sydney seemd to have taken it with better grace. Withdrawing into their own communities and finding comfort there?
When my club was told it was "too Greek" for mainstream Australia I, and others took that to mean, WE as people were also "too Greek" for mainstream Australia.... how could we NOT resent it?
Maybe Im just rambling on talking out of my arse? lol
