I also think “Melbourne United” would have been better than Carlton sc. But you can’t have your cake and eat it, either it’s affiliated with Carlton or it’s it’s own entity, not both
Watch his lip curl when Collingwood is mentioned.. Loyalties rund deep, when it come sto "the good of football" the bloke is a snake oil salesman...

Again, not to harp on about it, but therein lies one of the key differences re Italians in Melbourne v Italians in Sydney. The part of the story about being brought to princess park/Victoria park at a young age as an act of attempted assimilation into the culture/to fit in simply didn’t happen here to anywhere near the same degree. There’s nowhere near the level of force feeding/indoctrination from the nrl in Sydney as there is the afl in Melbourne. It’s very easy to ignore the nrl in Sydney if you’re not interested, not so the afl in Melbourne. Afl in Melbourne is conflated with Australian identity, especially back then. If you don’t have a team you’re not one of us

I think it was Spirit entering into a city group style relationship with Rangers. Went from being non ethically aligned to being a “Scottish club” in one foul swoop
Yes, I am aware of that ...... so I am a little baffled by what my memory is telling me.

Maybe I wrote to Northern Spirit about that awful decision?

Then again, look at Australian Soccer now .... everything owned by foreign entities ... and what's worse in the case of Melbourne Heart(less), basically branch of Manchester City!!

So weird, in qld afl is basically a migrant sport played and watched by mexicans (nickname for victorians and south australians)
I think the brisbane lions have almost no qld players and most fans are mexican immigrants. Most people call it gayfl, tho probably not as much anymore as its not pc. I saw the lions gf wins the last two years and fell asleep both times.

A lot of afl fans in qld can get stroppy about how massive the game is and that makes it the best sport in the world while we politely nod and smile.

Only South Melbourne's Number #1 fan, Banger, still calls it that (I think).

Some Sydney people still call us Mexicans. It really does sound so moronic. But hey ...

I started listening to the podcast, but everyone else's review's left me feeling it is a waste of my time. But I will listen .... I may find a gold nugget of 'truth'

I would say nowadays in Sydney afl is seen as a quirky alternative hipster sport for people who are willing to try something different, almost like someone who decides to take up quidditch as a sport at uni. And the swans have leaned into that heavily, and the “indigenous code” aspect of it. They’ve carved out a niche which is mainly eastern suburbs and inner west upper middle class as a weekend entertainment option. But that’s all it’ll ever be. They’ll never lose any sleep over a loss etc. Some of those people are I’ve had an interaction with are shocked when I tell them the core demographic of the afls support is very different in Melbourne

Glenardo makes a valid point I hadn't considered before.

I would always wonder why it was (or at least that how it seems) that it was ALWAYS South Melbourne that was making the most noise about being left out of the Aleague.. I mean I know both Cro clubs stuck fast but, no disrespect to other NSL clubs, they seemed content with just "surviving" in NPL land. Why did it, at least on the surface, appear to matter more to us?

One possible reason could be exactly what Glenardo said, AFL was and is SO part of assimilationist culture down here that soccer become a sort of safety net, an enclave for multiculturalism as WE wanted it... It sounds weird but I think back now to conversations with relatives about sport and me being so madly into soccer and being called a "real Greek" as opposed to their kids who loved "da footy"... Maybe down here we clung to soccer for an identity reason as well as love of the sport, without even realising it? It could explain why myself and others felt so betrayed by Australian soccer on a fundamental level wheres other communities in Adelaide, Brisbane and even Sydney seemd to have taken it with better grace. Withdrawing into their own communities and finding comfort there?

When my club was told it was "too Greek" for mainstream Australia I, and others took that to mean, WE as people were also "too Greek" for mainstream Australia.... how could we NOT resent it?

Maybe Im just rambling on talking out of my arse? lol

What do you guys think about ditching the academies? Sounds like what they do in Adelaide and that's working. Maybe there's room for both as City's academy seems successful.

They still have an npl team and he wants to ditch even that for "aura"

You would need to withdraw australia from international football to maintain "aura" through marketing alone

Ironic because melbourne prides itself as progressive as opposed to us backward queenslanders

Id be curious what the greek experience is like in qld compared to melbourne

Not to be dismissive but imo these Mediterranean migrant communities only really exist in big enough numbers in Sydney and Melbourne to have the critical mass necessary to be culturally noteworthy. Maybe Adelaide too in relative terms v the size of the city. Nowadays you’re getting the Chinese and Indian communities in big enough numbers nationally to also have that sort of cultural impact on all the major cities as a comparison for example

I remember going to a Brisbane Strikers v South Melbourne game at Lang Park in the late 1990's and there was quite a large and noisy contingent of fans from the Brisbane Olympic club....

And they definitely weren't supporting The Strikers....🤣

This was the era when South Melbourne was by far the best club side in Australia so I guess that they were quite popular in the general Greek diaspora around the whole country.

There where a bunch of legends from Adelaide with their South Melbourne Hellas banner at the Australian Championship final last year.. we still have a bit of a name around the traps :)

It Sticca had his way the Aleague wouldnt even need to have players, just a bunch of kids playing FIFA and 60K people in a stadium paying to watch.. "football but NOT as you know it" scum...

Noticed that. Sydney Olympic supporters would sometimes support Hellas if they were playing Sydney united/Marconi etc in a big game/final back in the day.
