why? LIV golf was their tip of the spear for sports washing AND property development.... if the taps are running dry why do you think they will stick with football?
Football likely has a better return on investment compared to golf and the Saudi clubs are bringing in continental silverware so naturally they'll stick with football and channel all the resources into that in addition to Saudi Arabia's hosting of the 2027 Asian Cup and 2034 World Cup.

cash strapped ?

As of early 2026, the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) holds roughly $925 billion to over $1 trillion in assets under management (AUM), aiming for $2–$3 trillion by 2030. The 2026–2030 strategy focuses on domestic investment, AI, technology, and tourism while tightening spending on "gigaprojects" like NEOM.

Got to say even though they have so much it staggers me how they tried to force the change in golf.
The game needed it to stir the US/PGA rule but just wow what they have poured in.
US$500M to John Rahm for eg......
US100M to our Cameron Smith !
Least they DGAF and others who signed up what becomes.
I agree football is cheaper in comparison and they get broadcasting out way more whereas LIV hasn't been able to get major broadcasting.

I would have thought that the GP and their UFC promotions would have a better return?
