Official South Melbourne Hellas thread 🔵⚪

We have to beat Bula midweek and its probably going to take something near our best team to win.

We will definitely need the majority of our best Starting XI to win the remaining matches. We have a buffer of 4 points at the top of the NPL Victoria ladder which allows us to focus on the last three remaining OFC Pro League matches.

This is where the dropped points against Bula, South Island and Vanuatu are now starting to come back to bite us.

Not scared of Auckland. Our best team smashes all these tinpot teams.
Spot on. The team that started against Preston, with the inclusion of Painter-Andrews and Cocks in the Starting XI, with Menelaou, Pope, Leech, and Inglese on the bench would have won today.

We just need to focus on the OFC Pro Lesgue for the next 8 days to lock in a spot in the Leaders group finals series.

It was a tight first half where it really was an arm wrestle. At halftime it would have seemed a safe bet that the match would have ended in a scoreless draw. But we turned it on in the second half.

Some things went our way. Eliopoulos nearly turned the ball into his own net late in the match. That penalty decision where Giannakopoulos got the ball could have gone against us.

But take away nothing from the team. It was a great performance in the second half. Pasquali and Giannakopoulos were huge again, along with the defence. They repelled all attacks. Bonada being used in the striker position was perfect. He held the ball up well and was ready to get physical with opposition players. Was much more agile than Swibel.

Who would have thought Dovison would pop up with a great goal. He was quiet in the first half, but he left his mark early on in the second half.

Special mention to O’Sullivan. He did well today and has really stepped up this year. This has provided another valuable option in the backline.

We still sit on top of the ladder and now have a 4 point lead. Not sure how long this will last given we have OFC Pro League commitments over the next 6 weeks.
Ethan really has stepped up these past 2-3 matches... really pleasing to see. Campbell's goal was magnificent, from where i was it was looking out by a foot and then curled in, gave Scott absolutely NO chance in hell of saving it... perfect strike...

All in all good effort. We really needed the 3rd goal just before HT.

Need to send best team over to clean this up.

Yeah I was frustrated watching that too, but you are correct, our first XI plus 3-4 decent step ins are enough to pu this to bed whn the finals roll around. The perfect scenario for us is being top of the table at home leading up to May when we are going to have tpo toake the foot off a bit... I was worried about our squad depth but now not so much. We need to shed 2-3 duds and maybe picp up 2 more during teh trasnfer, if Manny is indeed coming back home for the enf seasona nd AUs Champs that si enouhg in my eyes.

Absolute hats off to Sinisa , Sam, Peter and the team for the squad we have put together.... I am happy to be eating humble pie...

There’s a lot to unpack from today’s match against Auckland.

Firstly, our Starting XI was as expected. I was surprised that we had such a thin bench with only 2 outfield players. Apart from the first ten minutes of the first half, we actually played well and took a deserved first half lead. That first ten minutes in the first half was just awful from South. We were just shell shocked by that early goal after 23 seconds. Special call out to Swibel who held the ball well and created the opportunity for Leech to bury that goal and gives us the lead.

For some reason, we came out in the second half the same way we did as we started the first half. Auckland took the initiative and appplied tremendous pressure on the undermanned South team.

Problem was that we lacked a bench to freshen our team. Auckland made full use of their bench and brought on fresh legs to search for that third goal. We brought on Lackay, to play in Right Back shifted Painter-Andrews to Centre Back.

You could see the South players were suffering in the last 15 minutes. The red card could be argued changed the balance of the contest against us. With a team lacking significant quality, suffering from the humidity and down to 10 men, it was always going to be a struggle to hold on that 2-2 scoreline.

That Auckland third goal can only be described as comical and farcical. Our defending was practically nonexistent. You can’t give away such goals. At the end of the day, two poorly defended situations gave the win to Auckland.

I have to be fair and say that the team toiled and worked hard to be leading 2-1 with about half an hour left. Players like Inglese, Coveny, Menelaou, Pope, and Cocks didn’t stop running all day.

The quality of refereeing today was poor. That free kick called on Cocks in the second half was laughable, and stunned he missed that corner that Coveny had correctly won at the end of the first half. Sometimes the referee decisions just don’t go your way.

A full strength Starting XI would have won today.
Thanks for the summary, I was on hosting duties for Easter yesterday and was only keeping one eye on it.. Will watch the replay tonight.

I love how he did not take that extra touch! He is somewhat like Cocks. Perhaps less effective at taking players on but maybe having a better shot on goal.

It's the injury count (or virtual lack of it!) that has amazed me.

He is also very much a confidence player, you can tell when he hesitates to shoot for fear of missing and tries to lay off...

He's now a viable option in that position that he can share it with Painter-Andrews.

Anyone heard that rumour that it could be Aguek and Sawyer both returning? That would be nuts!
Yes I DID hear that particular little tasty rumour and by a sort of credible source... I refuse to believe it as that squad will be pretty much invincible.... we cant have everything all at once.

A forward line of Aguek and Sawyer would be unbelievably amazing. I had heard whispers about Aguek but not Sawyer.

What is the situation with Sawyer ? Is he looking to move on from the MacArthur Bulls? Below are his A League stats.

It more wishful thinking I reckon, Aleague season is almost over for the club with the upside down robot man doing a poo as a logo. Contracts are usually ended by June anyway, just in time for the NPL window and the rumours to start flying thick and fast...

Does anyone have access to any player social media accounts? Which senior players have subsequently travelled to Fiji for the remaining hub matches?
