NPL 2026

One theory of mine is that Sydneysiders are (were?) generally more flakey than Melbournians. I lived in Sydney for a year in 1998/1999 and my fellow employees had ZERO attachment to the company we worked at. I can imagine what the Greek Sydneysider's were like.

I doubt this is a thing. Whatever Sydney Greeks jumped on Sydney fc would be insignificant compared to the amount of Greeks that jumped on MV, and here they even brag about changing teams!

It’s true. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that, it’s clear to see the general football community value Olympic

Interestingly, not to have a dig, but a similar point could be made about Victoria being an anomaly having no strong Italian clubs. Where in nsw, sa (Marconi, APIA, Adelaide city) etc even wa and qld (Perth azzurri, Brisbane city) to an extent some of the strongest clubs are of Italian extraction (I still don’t count Avondale for reasons I’ve gone over previously)
Bulleen and either of the Juves are relatively strong but you are right, its odd that we have two Maltese clubs (as an example) and only 1 x Italian down here in top flight (and not a true one Ill give you that).

Maybe your theory about AFL poaching all the Italians is right?

The Greek community need to get together and build a social/football club. They have a lot of small social clubs all over the place in Sydney.. sell them and put the money into one big social/football club.

Even the Portuguese community, which is small in comparison, has three proper social clubs, two of them have football clubs. There has been talk of a merger to make one club, which I completely agree with.
Most of the social clubs are strictly regional (some so specific its mainly families from 4-5 mountain villages) and not about sport in any way. The have ALOT of real estate btw, most of it in once cheaper commercial areas, now worth millions upon millions of dollars.

Greek football clubs developed separate to the social clubs (with some exceptions) as the football clubs were always ONLY about the football.

They are the worst of the worst in my eyes.. The self loathing wogs that look you in the eyes and try and act all sincere saying "I just really love football and want to support whats best for the sport in this country".... And then talk about what Greek team they are cosplaying as at Melbourne Victory games next week and "the new Greek way kit is awesome eh?"

This is absurd that Olympic could not even build a semblance of a home in the last 40 years. Compare the 2 demographic maps of Melbourne and Sydney.

South Melbourne has been badly affected by the outward movement to the fringes, whereas Sydney Greeks are STILL in the Earlwood hinterland.

I lived in Sydney for a year in 1998/1999 and my fellow employees had ZERO attachment to the company we worked at. I can imagine what the Greek Sydneysider's were like. They would have jumped on that Sydney FC bandwagon I can imagine! I am only talking about a difference of degrees, rather than anything significant. But I thought I would just mention my theory.
As you say, these are generalisations and are only about a difference of degrees, but as someone who’s also lived and worked in both cities I would say Melbourne blokes are more likely to have their whole social lives/personal identity inextricably linked to a football club (afl or soccer) they follow. Where as the average Sydneysider is more likely to see it as one of a plethora of potential entertainment options. A larger proportion of Sydneysiders would choose a day at the beach over going to the game unless it’s a big match, where as it would be the reverse in Melbourne, going to the game would be the default unless there was some other special event etc

Again, I’m not talking about myself necessarily, or the core supporters of clubs, just a generalisation at a population wide level. Probably understandable given the reason many people chose to cop the cost of Sydney housing is usually atleast somewhat connected to the city’s natural setting

The demographic map's I provided are more relevant I think. Olympic have no excuse for not having a home and some decent support.

I assume Sydney had less land up for grabs in the inner west compared to Melbourne, being the Garden State back in the 1950's --> 1970's.

That doesnt explain why there are no other suburban Greek clubs in Sydney though...

Canterbury bankstown, Gladesville-Ryde, Liverpool Olympic, Blacktown Spartans kinda etc
Thats just 4 though..... not trying to be annoying because we've had the conversation previously but down here in Melbourne we have 4 Greek clubs in the top 5 of the NPL league alone, let alone the dozens upon dozens of others in VPL and state leagues..

No doubt. Melbourne has an abnormally high number of Greek clubs, and I’d say suburban offshoot clubs in general, there’s 4 Croatian clubs in the top 2 tiers, 3-4 Italian clubs, multiple Macedonian clubs etc etc

As I said last week, in Melb just assume the club is Greek unless otherwise specified

The Cypriot club in Stanmore is sitting on a mountain of gold but you'd be hard pressed to find someone under the age of 70 there hahahaha

arn't we talking of the number of greek background clubs around be it city or otherwise - another point is Melb does have the gong the most greek pop outside of Greece for a long time....so dozens isn't surprising and most typically are offshoots of disgruntled ones related to the bigger clubs.
Are we surprised more clubs there ? no.
and good them your league having 4 in the top 5.
The main point as So Of Sam mentions more so after all these years SO have not got their shit together full stop for decades.
There's enough of them here.
They should have got their own home/field etc 20+yrs ago.
The donkeys rode of the back of local council using Belmore and they knew the writing was on the wall about that ground 20yrs ago.
NRL/Dogs news of that ground was in press like mad, they only use it once or twice per season since 2015 after not using it for years due to renos and other external probs.
SO are the blame totally never doing something about it.
We don't have greek background numbers like Melb but looking up its around 141K.
IF smaller association greek background clubs can establish their homes WTF one of the longest known in NSL/NPL not yet all the other clubs have security pretty much.

Thats how it is here too.

If you drive up High Street heading north every second shop has a little label saying Pan (insert mountain region here) Brotherhood Social Club - Shopfronts bought with raffles and bake sales 80-90 years ago worth mutiple million dollars to developers now.

The oldies bought them hoping their kids, kids, kids would still do their weddings and baptisms there, their 21st and engagement parties... Greek dancing classes etc etc.. Little did they count on their darling Spiro marrying a skip girl he met at uni and her insisting that marble lions and paintings of the Parthenon were NOT part of her bridal "theme" .. hahah Sad thing is one by one these will all be sold off and passed on to charities because the youth arent interested in managing them anymore...
