NPL 2026

whatever decision FNSW decide with this off the ball incident it will be frown upon and not everyone will agree with it.

This was a second yellow offence, not a straight red. (yellow cards cannot be upgraded to red) The game play video only shows a coming together. It's because of the behind the goal camera that actually caught the stomp. I'm assuming that camera was only there for Sutherlands documentary?

i wouldnt want to be the ones making the decision at FNSW as this could open up a can of worms in the future.

The interesting thing is that despite the outrage there are standard suspension periods for various offences that are clearly defined. I wouldn't be surprised if the actual period might be 2 or 3 games from the FootballNSW disciplinary committee. Anything further is on the club itself, in many ways this is now an internal administrative matter. Lot's of chatter there I'm sure.

I've been coaching in the NPL system for about 15 years. I know players that have been banned for headbutts and punches for about 8-10 games. This fits into violent conduct so I'd assuming it would be around the same amount of games.

As they should be.

However, were those incidents red cards at the time, or came after the incident upon review?
 
It’s one of those funny ones in football where if you did that on the street you’d be looking at potential charges, but because it’s on a soccer field we’re talking about the number weeks he gets suspended. It’s debatable whether it should even be viewed as within the context of the game given how far off the ball it was

Obviously I won’t divulge their identity, but I have relatives who were playing at the highest level of the game in this country in the 70s and 80s (state league in the pre nsl era and then nsl after it’s founding) funny to go back and look at some of those games and see what even the commentators excused at the time as “he was going for the ball a yellow card is harsh” but the you ask him about the incident privately and he tells you “oh no I stomped on him, he was being a cunt all game“

Yeah I tend to agree with you... Guy should cop his whack from the federation and move on... His reputation would be dogshit now anyway, no need for this social media, viral, millennial online backlash bullshit... ...

As player in the 80-90s I can very much tell you there were many ways to hurt a pacy winger.... All was fair in love and war provided the ref or lino didnt catch on... But this muppet, did it off the play and behind the blokes back.... its pretty gutless...

Yes, maybe that’s why I can never understand this sort of thing. As someone who used to play an attacking position myself back in the day I’ve certainly been pinched, had my Achilles/feet stood on, had defenders fingers trying to find be their way into my nether regions etc never found it to be in the spirit of the game personally, but hey, no one can deny that obviously it is for some

There is the list of punishments for various infractions somewhere on the FootballNSW. I know of a player that was banned for 5 years for striking a referee. This is a 2nd yellow card offence for stamping and off the ball, depends on how hard they want to go really.
