Matildas vs Argentina

Two more changes for the Matildas. Clare Wheeler off for Leah Davidson. Kaitlyn Torpey is replaced by Bryleeh Henry.

Teagan Micah with a crucial save to deny Argentina a goal and keep the clean sheet 79 minutes in.

More substitutions for the Matildas. Courtney Nevin comes on for Jamilla Rankin, as does Tash Prior, replacing the debutant Kahli Johnson.

Good win with some very decent performances and combinations.

Argentina being a lesser opponent certainly helped us to look better with a lot of loose balls and heavy touches being swooped on by us when they went into open space - even when the Argentinian player had a better start position.

I liked Rankin and Grant particularly. Wheeler made some mistakes and lost some ball under physical pressure, but her speed and skill on the ball also produced some beautiful moments. Good performance from her.

I think Johnson reminded me a little of Devanna with the strength to hold off opponents and speed to take advantage. Not saying they play the same but it has been awhile since we had someone up front who could physically hold up play while choosing options and also had the balance and skill to then run on with it if that was the chosen option.

A lot of our forwards tend to rely on outright strength or running into space like Foord and Heyman without showing all that much composure - a bit of frantic energy, an attempt to shield the ball on the way somewhere else and mixed results. Not necessarily saying that Johnson is more effective than the other forwards, but I like the fact she can create in tight spaces with intelligence.

The game was worth watching and I don't think many of the 43k would have gone home unhappy with the spectacle (as opposed to simply being happy that we got a win).

Wheeler should play further forward as a midfield playmaker, instead of further back watching our centre backs exchange sideways passes.

Agree, and I think Emily van Egmond should be played as an attacking midfielder rather than as part of the forward line or even as a dedicated striker also.
